gas filters
Comments (2)hortsense, if the location of the filter has it placed where heat (exiting air from cooling shroud, near to exhaust components) will be present, the wrap is likely to keep the fuel cool. Keeping the fuel cool would be important if this engine utilizes a fuel pump to bring the fuel to the carb. Overheated fuel can begin to vaporize which will sometimes result in a "vapor lock" . Vapor lock can occur in two ways. The "classic" vapor lock occurs inside the fuel pump and fuel delivery line (diaphragm type pumps only) where the fuel pump body and fuel line from pump to carb absorb sufficient heat from the hot engine (after the engine is shut off) to vaporize the gasoline. The vaporized gasoline will create a "positive pressure" between the inlet check valve of the fuel pump and the float valve in the carburetor, or the outlet check valve of the pump and the carburetor, or both. This pressure will then displace the fuel in the line to the carb when the pressure exceeds the rating of the carb float valve (fuel pipe pressure unseats the needle valve). Any liquid fuel that is displaced will flow into (and overfill) the float bowl, causing the engine to be "temporarily flooded". This type of vapor lock can also prevent the fuel pump from pumping fuel because the pump "delivery pulses" are absorbed by the vapor pressure (gases or vapors can be compressed, liquids cannot be compressed). The fact that the fuel line to carb is under pressure (from the hot vaporized fuel) means that the delivery of fuel is halted until the entire engine and fuel system cools below the "vapor point" of the fuel. This once caused many a headache to motorists in the "old days" in hot weather. The motorist would shut off the vehicle and run into a store (or other errand) for a minute or two. Upon returning to the vehicle, they might find it would not start (due to both "flooding" and vapor lock). The usual remedy was to pour cool water on the fuel pump and line to the carb, then get in and hold the accelerator pedal to the floor until it started up. The modern electric fuel pump and higher pressure EFI systems have eliminated this form of vapor lock. The other form of vapor lock can occur when a portion of the fuel lines (possibly including the fuel filter) get heated enough to vaporize a portion of the fuel. "Normally", this type of vaporization displaces the fuel back into the fuel tank in the form of "vapor bubbles" and liquid fuel will immediately flow into the line to occupy the space created by the vaporized fuel (in a sort of "convection driven cycle"). Because the heat is being transported back to the tank by the vapor, and cooler liquid fuel is replacing the vapor space, this phenomenon is very short lived and will not even be noticed under average conditions. However, if the fuel piping (hoses etc.) is routed so that there are any "high points" where the vapors can become trapped, it could cause the engine to be "hard to get started again" after a brief "hot shutdown" (requiring a longer cranking period with the starter before the engine "catches on". Considering that Cub or Kohler might have included the foam wrap to minimize thermal related problems, you might be better off insisting on the identical replacement part so as not to defeat a benefit provided by the OEM folks. I find that when I shop for parts (various brands of OEM), it seems that more and more often, the FIRST offer is for a non-OEM, aftermarket part. Maybe the profit margin on those is better (for the store owner) than what is afforded by the OEM line of parts. It might also be true that the aftermarket stuff will perform ok for most people under most conditions. I'm not sure if you wish to test the non OEM stuff to see if it works (we have read many times here about how "picky" Kohler engines can be about fuel filter brands. It is generally recommended that Kohler engines use only Kohler branded fuel filters....See MoreFriday's Severe Weather: Tune In, It Has Begun
Comments (5)I was glad to read on the other thread that our GW folks in Norman made it through yesterday with nothing more than some landscape damage. I was watching it closely because Larry was driving back from Eufaula and coming into the east side of the metro area just as it was starting to move towards Shawnee. We had to visit the storm shelter around 3 this morning due to a tornado warning for Logan County. There's nothing like waking from a sound sleep and experiencing that "oh no, here we go" feeling when you realize what's going on and the adrenaline (or is just plain old fear?) kicks in. I had watched the TV coverage until around 1 when it seemed to be dying down, which obviously it did not. I don't know if there was ever an actual funnel but News9 was reporting one southwest of us and moving our way. I do know there was a tremendous amount of rain! It will be a few days before I can finish planting the garden, and that's if we don't get more today. As much as I appreciate the better prediction and warning system we have now, I think it raises my anxiety level (a lot) when we're under the type of warning we are today when it sounds like almost a certainty that there will be a significant weather event. Especially after the devastating tornadoes of 2011. And we're in the bullseye in central OK. So I'm going to try and stay busy today to keep my mind off it, but will be paying attention when the warnings start. I hope everyone will be safe today! Suzie...See Moretgif
Comments (12)I did most of my gardening two weeks ago, and last week-end we repotted the epidendrum that was hanging in the apple tree. It got divided up into about 4-5 pots because it was so overgrown. The apple tree still has leaves from last summer - I didn't know they were evergreen. I got some Phalaenopsis for the yard also - they were very cheap - I guess because it was the end of the season. I bought about three smaller ones for $6.88 each that I think are cattelayas, but I'm not sure. I'm doing mostly potted plants in the yard for now, and these are nice to bring inside when they bloom. I bought several tomato plants and a pepper plant, all of which are in pots, along the with new basil plants, which are all doing well. My yard here is a lot sunnier than the one in Venice, and so I expect the herbs to do better, but I'll have to keep the orchids in shady areas, which might be difficult. We bought three aloe plants for the yard, but they are in pots for now until they get bigger. I should have saved some from my yard in Venice, and after my burn accident, I decided that we really needed to get more. I think the new ones I bought will have different flowers - at least I'm hoping for some variety. I have another drafting job to do this week-end, but at least it will be extra money. I'll have to start on the taxes also, but we're going to hire someone to do them for us this year, since it will be a lot more complicated. Lars...See MoreFriday weather report
Comments (10)When people give me the cold 'nuff ferya? I usually respond Just about, another 20-30ð and if the wind would just come up a little more... Usually shuts 'em up! Otherwise, I'm not far from your conditions Dotmom. Clouds haven't moved in just yet. Still a couple below zero and the sun is nice and bright. The guy I hire to shovel for me was just here and cleaned things out so that's taken care of. Didn't do it for the last snow or two so I wanted to get it taken care of. Heavier clouds should move in before long. Just noticed something interesting. On my weather page I have a "bug" for Accuweather and it's showing -8ð with a "Real Feel" temp of -6ð! Presumably it's the sun? Otherwise it's kind of strange because the reported wind is 5 mph which gives a -20ð windchill. Sure doesn't take much breeze at those temps, does it? Usually the "Real Feel" corresponds to windchill or humiture. AccuWeather is a little AccuGoofy today methinks. Although I'd like to go to the store and pick up a few things (have had some hankerings lately!), but I think I'm going to stay put. My work is done for the week. I've got a pantry and freezer to feed me. El loco gatto wants on-demand attention. Have laundry to do and it's warm in here. I just have this feeling it's a good idea to stay put and not take unnecessary risks today (again). Plus it saves money too! As I'm typing this the clouds are thickening and the sun is dimming. Good afternoon to surf or nap. Or see if I have the makings for some chili!...See MoreRebecca (7a)
