what to plant after strawberries

I'm in zone 5a and I have a strawberry patch in raised beds that has just about run its course. I'm going to leave it be for this year to see what happens, but any suggestions for what I can plant afterward? It usually peters out in July. Even if it's something I could plant this year to make it a suitable bed for something next year, that would be useful. It's the timing that's throwing me off.

Vegetables okay, or just fruit? I've got a strawberry bed on the way out and am going to plant some green beans in it. I planted bush beans late July last year and got a decent late summer crop from it.

In this bed I plan to plant some pole beans instead of bush, and get them in the ground earlier. Trellised they won't get much in the way of any later strawberries. I find pole beans a lot easier to pick and output spread or over time. I mainly use for fresh eating not canning so that works better for me.

You could probably do a late planting of summer squash too but it would totally cover the berries in the bed and not allow easy access to pick like pole beans.

Not quite sure if you mean you'll be ripping out the strawberry plants after they fruit, or what? I'm same zone -- I had a small strawberry bed that was dwindling and decided to clear it out last year. I used it for planting my garlic last autumn, but I put it on the ends so that I can plant something larger in the center portion this season. Whatever I plant will have more room once I dig the garlic in early July.

It was recommended to me to mulch with pine needles over the plants in winter. They protected well, allowing moisture through but not rotting the crowns. I have just pushed them aside and it seems they will be good there also. 'Course I've only seen maybe 5 slugs here in Colorado, so maybe I don't have a good handle on the problem.

My strawberries do not dieback. Well some did, but I think they are problem plants. Probably have a leaf fungus. Slugs are easy, just use the organic slug pesticide. Like Sluggo. Raspberries grow in just about anything, Not sure why they would taste different? The only thing I can think of is stink bugs. Strawberries like a rich soil, mine perform better in the better soils. I have one patch which really is used as a ground cover. the soil is poor, and the berries tend to be small and dry. So I guess they would taste better if better soil is used. Thinking about it, some of my raspberries that suffered some winter damage produced berries that were not great. They were small and bitter. But if the cane produced normal sized berries they tasted fine. I have 2 raspberry patches one is in a raised bed with premium soil, the other is in ground with a clay soil that has been amended every year for three years. Still it is rather poor. I cannot discern any difference in taste between the beds.

If you are a small family gardener, and like fresh strawberry for a long period (home canners lean towards a couple of big harvests to get all their work overwith) you need to consider buying small groups of different types. So you get early berries early in the season, and later berries late in the season. There are so many different types available by mail order and new ones pop up every year so there is no way to proclaim one breed as superior to others. Different gardens with different gardeners need different plants. Try whatever you can find. Some of my tastiest berries come from plants given to me by friends - no name cultivars. Don't believe the hype.

Our garden raises dandy berries.More than we can eat, freeze and give away :0) But catching the dirt at just the right time for planting berries - now that is the trick. It's the first time we have ever been 'caught' like this. Hubs checked this morning and thinks 'if we don't get any more rain this week (yes, they are predicting more) we can plant them. I checked the new plants and they don't look as bad now that I have given them some sunlight - looking greener. So, we may save them in yet. Thanks everyone for your comments. Appreciate them.

Oops - yes, I should have specified I'm ripping out the plants after the strawberries are done fruiting. I'm not looking necessarily for fruit again after them. Vegetables are good too. I just didn't have a good idea of what I could plant, since there will still be time in the growing season. Thank you.
