Winter dieback

Hello all,

I had a Lot of winter dieback on my Pat Austin, I put it in last year as an own root from Roses Unlimited. When I say a lot I mean there's nothing left but a stub! There was a little shoot coming off the stub when I pruned, but that disappeared in the last few days so I'm wondering if it's time to shovel prune this one? No sign of any suckers. Anyone experience anything similar this year? We had an oddly warm Feb. and then a pretty cold and windy March. Could it be because of that? Should I have babied it more? I didn't winter protect it much because it's pretty close to my house and I thought own roots were supposed to be more hardy? Also, I thought Pat Austin was pretty hardy in my zone. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
