How low a temp safe for vulnerable hydrangeas (bloom on old wood)

Temps later this week will be 38 degrees F nighttime. Night before and
night after that low are supposed to be a low of 40 F. I pulled the leaves away
to let the leaves unfurl, and pulled out one trash can full of leaves, which I
saved in case I still need them. All are still caged.

Is this low enough that I should put the leaves back? Or
just cover the cage with a sheet? Daytime temps will be from low 50’s to low 60’s.

It would be useful to know at what temperature I should protect
them. That's not a frost, but still pretty cold.

Ones in question are Alice,
another shorter-growing oak leaf whose name I unfortunately I did not record, and 2 very
small Nikko Blues.

Thanks.
