These popped up in my yard
Comments (9)Thanks for the input everyone! :) I think the first one is a pretty flower and glad it decided to popped up out of nowhere. The second one I will leave for a little bit longer but so far it has no flowers or buds on it so it may be a weed....See MoreI'm so excited! My first seedlings popped up!
Comments (48)Man, I can't believe all the stuff you guys do to germinate these babies. I like my method of just sticking them in the starter greenhouse and setting it in the breezeway. I guess if you don't have a cold room or area like that to put them, it is necessary to refrigerate them. I'm just so excited about them popping up in the starter cells without any fuss. I see new seedlings popping up all the time. I had one whole section of the cells that I was afraid weren't going to do anything, but when I got home for lunch today, another new baby had begun to emerge in that section, finally! I filled up two more of those 72-cell starters last weekend, and I can't wait to see what they produce. My biggest baby already has split and is branching out in two directions!! I'll have a tiny rose "bush" soon!! That one is from ELSIE MELTON. My best germinator so far tho, seems to be LAVANDE. There are 6-7 of them! I can't wait to see how different each one will be. This is so much fun!!...See MoreMy pop-up is popped up...
Comments (18)Hi Socks - I set it up myself...well, my six year old son and 12 year old daughter helped a bit...pretty easy. Now, I am definitely not as confident in my ability to get it to pop 'down'...we'll see... I am mostly concerned about squirrels and chipmunks, I think. They just tear into everything around these parts. One summer they used every singly seat cushion on my deck furniture chairs to pad their nests! I really despise them. Maybe they won't be interested in this (I hope). Not sure what to do to keep them away, really. So, I am trying to extend the amount of time I keep a bunch of my cacti and succulents outdoors, rather than jamming them into my sunroom this year. That way, I may try to segue them into a dark dormancy in my garage instead of the sunroom - giving them a deeper sleep perhaps AND freeing up growing space under HID lights in my sunroom. They just wouldn't get the same dry cold in the sunroom that I think I can give them with the greenhouse - maybe end up with better flowering next year, too? By the end of November, I think they will all be indoors somewhere - either garage or sunroom. Then, the snows come...seems so far away with 90s forecast all week for us ;-). Josh - I see what you mean...just hope it doesn't get overtaken by marauding banditos! T...See MoreWho has already woken up in your yard?
Comments (83)Good heavens, what beautiful pictures you all have! I wish I had some LAND to plant hostas in, but for the time being (especially with the real estate HALT due to coronavirus), I'm up here on the second floor of my apartment complex, with my "garden" on my balcony. Appletini is leading the 38 plants presently there in development: Here is the view from my balcony window today (sorry for the spots on the glass): The big red heuchie in the middle is my darlin' Georgia Peach. The bright green heuchie 2 to its left is Sweet Tart. I'll try to take some more closeup pics tomorrow. And here is the view to the left of the above, with the 4-tier wire shelving unit's plants. Paisley Print is pipping big time on the top right, heuchie Sugar Berry is bursting forth on the top left, and Ripple Effect is starting to unfurl in the middle. Paradise Island is unfurling on the left of the middle shelf, Gypsy Rose is pipping in the middle, and Yellow Polka Dot Bikini has yet to make an appearance to its right. On the bottom shelf is Rainbow's End, unfurling. I am going to hang a bungee-cord divided net, meant to string across the back of your hatchback car to hold your groceries from falling down, across that opening between the shelves. It's about 3 1/2 feet wide. I will use big S-hooks across the length of the bungee-cord net, and place some spare 1-gallon black fabric grow bags in each pocket (one per pocket). That will make a novel way to hang annuals on the balcony railing. The flowers will be able to poke through the bungee-cord netting, it should look cool. And I love being able to re-purpose the bungee-cord net. If it looks good, I might get another one for the other narrow side of the balcony railing, not viewable in this pic. The green hardware cloth you see is the anti-Zizu conservation measure. That little cat just about stopped my heart a couple weeks ago when she casually slipped right between the balcony railing and began to stroll up and down the portion of the balcony outside the railing. I ran inside and went right to Amazon to order the vinyl covered hardware cloth, which I put up with black nylon cable ties. Now Zizu is restricted to watching the birds from inside the railing, and I don't have to worry. She's only allowed there when I'm out on the balcony as well, so there will be no climbing over....See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
