Earliest Ripening Fig Varieties
Comments (0)I have essentially a heat saturated, sun drenched concrete paved sunken garden (walled on three sides...open side faces south), which I believe will make a perfect spot for my in progress pot culture fig grove. This is a new, 2016, gardening project for me. I have never grown figs before. My zone is 6b. The fig trees will be brought in when it begins to drop below freezing in the fall. In order to get a fair harvest of all the figs produced, ripening before the frosts hit, I am thinking early ripening figs will do the best. Most of my neighbor's in ground grown figs do not ripen by the first frost. Does my plan make sense? My "orchard," so far are young figs. The varieties are: Black Spanish Mission, Celeste, Conadria, Ischia, Little Miss Figgy, Olympian, Petite Nigra, White Marseilles, and Violette Dr Bordeaux. My question is, Are these good choices for pot culture, and which ones ripen earliest? Which others should I try? If I can squeezes in one last question... What temperature is the highest, not lowest, that will keep a fig tree dormant? I have the choice of an unheated fruit cellar where it does go below freezing, to about 20 degrees F., or a basement that stays about 55-60 degrees F., in which to place the fig trees over winter. Can either place be used? Thanks for your help!...See MoreEmergency Repot of Little Miss Figgy
Comments (3)Thanks for your comments & support, Anna. I was fairly gentle while massaging & trimming her roots & hope I didn't do anything too severe...but she is looking good this morning. We had rain for a few hours yesterday afternoon which I think helped her get settled in her new pot & soil. The figs are still attached so time will tell if they make it....See MoreLittle miss figgy

Comments (0)Hi. I planted a dwarf "Little Miss Figgy" in a container two years ago. It looked great last summer, no fruit yet though. This year as the leaves are coming out I am noticing brown spots and some yellowing on the leaves. Can anyone tell me the problem - fungus/rust maybe? - and thoughts on how to fix?...See Moregreenman62
