Oriental/Chinese veges, specially leafy: please educate me
Comments (15)Thanks every one for all the info. So, I planted some of the winter leafy stuff, first time doing winter garden. I am in Dallas. Early September, we had a week when night temps dipped down into 60s. After that i planted these things. Since then day temps have been up and down, highs between 80s - 90s, but the night temps have been in high 50s to low 60s. Over the first 3 weeks of September I planted various kales/collards, spinach, cabbage, mustards, Chinese cabbage, broccolli etc. The only things that germinated were radishes, turnips, beets. Most others did not germinate at all. Thinking that i planted them too deep, I replanted most of them, not so deep this time. Since then, a few things have germinated very sparsely. In 3-4 weeks since germination, none of them have really grown much. Most don't even have the first set of true leaves. Cause?: Is this temperature related? Or may be this is normal. Should I plant some more seeds when the temps go down or the ones that are already in the ground will germinate then. The first frost will be around Nov 15. thanks....See MoreQuestion for Ingrid: Chaucer
Comments (3)Thanks, Ingrid. I've ordered many times from them, and this would be the first mix-up. No big deal. I look at is as a way of trying a plant I might not have thought to try on my own. I'm afraid I didn't say that in the right way. I wasn't trying to say everything they have is mixed up, only Claire Rose and Chaucer. It would be an easy thing for a plant or two to take each other's place, especially if they're sitting next to each other in the greenhouse. I hope you get your Chaucer soon! Will you take pics for us when it blooms? Your photos always look so amazing. Thanks for the Potter and Moore recommendation. I'm afraid I've gone noisette crazy at the moment. I have both Jeanne d'Arc and Nastarana on order!...See MoreToday is special for me
Comments (19)Greetings Karen, and congrats on your Silver anniversary! So what'll you be doing: -having a party at a silver bar? -or buying one (being, some claim, a better bargain than a gold bar, these days)? ole joyfuelled (with no help from either silver ... or gold [bars, that is])...See MoreOne of my favorite Austin roses - Chaucer
Comments (23)In his book David Austin's English Roses (2nd ed 1996), Mr Austin lists 16 roses which he felt were superseded by newer releases. Amongst those 16 were Chaucer & Pretty Jessica. He did add that some people would disagree & where these roses were doing well, they should be retained & enjoyed. He also had a further 9 roses which he considered inferior and would not recommend growing at all. I am not sure whether royalties had anything to do with this or whether he just wanted people to see the best of English Roses....See Moreromogen
