A sizzler of a day but it's peak here
Comments (13)THANKS for the nice remarks everyone. Seems like the forum is slow on the weekends? Or maybe everyone is in the pool to escape the heat...LOL. I still say that Little Boy and Fat Cat were separated at birth! HaHa....look at those portly fellows! If only they lived closer they could lay around together in the shade, comparing tummy girth and waiting for the next meal. As you can see, Fat Cat has earned his name. (It used to be Nemo, btw). Zeus and Lily thank you for the compliments. Celeste...See MoreIt's Peak Rose, Baby!
Comments (13)Thanks, all! Marlorena, you're right--that genetic study of China roses at Texas A&M established that MG = Fabvier. I imprinted on "Martha," though, and tend to forget. No word, unfortunately, on any "Speedy Gonzalez." Catspa, my Arcadia is still pretty small, but I love the sound of yours--it seems I have something to look forward to! Thank you for the kind words, Ingrid! I wish I had half the ability of someone like you or Daisy to create a graceful, harmonious overall design, but that's not my gift, so instead I focus my pleasure at a smaller scale--on the lovely, lovely blooms....See Morea-rose-is-a-rose-is-a-rose-unless-its-an-earth-kind-rose/
Comments (10)Henry, A dead rat looks realistic for the condition it is in, too. Many of the Earth-Kind roses are, and this is my OPINION only (please don't beat me over the head with a rose cane as Chris, from New Flora, likes to do when I express my opinion/personal experience), not very disease resistant, and certainly not in the least winter hardy in Portland, Maine. Any novice rose gardener would know about winter hardiness, especially in Portland, ME. Where is/was the local ARS Chapter/ Rose Club to help out? Who ever was in charge of the whole idea of devoting an entire public rose garden, capable of holding 600 roses, to a years long test of just 61 bushes (3 each of 21 Earth-Kind varieties), did not make a wise move. Test the E-K roses in a secluded spot, and plant annuals in the rose beds for the duration of the test. At least the public will have something beautiful to stroll through. The Karl Switzer Rose Circle, I am certain, used to be a magnificent sight. Now look at it, pitiful. I think it has fallen victim to one or all of the following: political correctness, green-earthers, decision by committee, or the creeping laziness many Americans are exhibiting more and more. Expecting even tough roses to thrive and flourish with no: dead heading, annual pruning, watering, fertilizing, etc., is a Utopian's dream, not reality. When you give little, get get little. I am approaching the Karl Switzer Rose Circle from the standpoint of a visitor to the garden today. I am willing to bet that 99 visitors out of 100 visitors to the garden would call it, "dismal," too. The one visitor who would have no negative comment to voice would be someone's Poodle, on a leash, of course. Moses...See MoreOMG I'm cleaning my rose beds & can't believe how many roses are dead!
Comments (15)Sympathies on the losses, Beth. I know you love your oddball roses and you're one of the people in the US that has some of these unobtainable roses. It's frustrating to lose track of such things, but as you mentioned you've had a lot else on your mind. I'm glad you are at peace about your mom, but it still has taken a toll in emotions and time along the way. It's good that many of the roses will be replaceable, and I'm sure Burling would reserve some of them for you if needed. Take a deep breath and look at the roses that have SURVIVED and are blooming. For me that's the antidote to the rose carnage we have in cold zones after every winter. I grieve the ones I've lost till I pull the tags and wipe them from my lists, then they aren't staring me in the face to remind me of what isn't there anymore. Sometimes then I can look back at the losses after a year or two and appreciate something I've put in place instead as much or more. I wish I could share cuttings with you to help out, but getting plants in and out of California isn't something one can do on a casual basis I fear. Hang in there and take lots of fabulous pictures of the roses you still have! We'll be watching for them. Cynthia...See Morefig_insanity Z7b E TN
