alwazeroom4more, The Pawpaw,Asimina triloba doesn't have a separate male and female plant.It's the way the flowers are timed to be fertile that causes them to need another variety to produce fruit.The Sunflower variety is about the only one I've heard to be self fertile. There are other species related to Asimina triloba (Asimina incarna, A. longifolia, A. obovata, A. parviflora, A. pygmaea, A. reticulata, A. tetramera, A. X nashii)that grow more in the Southeastern US.Asimina Triloba requires about 400 chill hours. I have some seedlings,three varieties of A.triloba,but not sure if they are compatible in your zone. bboy, ginkgonut, and, others: Thanks for all the helpful information, and especially, your opinions regarding this Magnolia variety. bboy: What exactly about my climate will cause the flowers to wash-out of color? Is it the cold springtime temp's? Can you explain a little more about how temp's. may affect color? The tree that I have my eye on looks to be at least 10 years old, and, has a nicely tapered trunk, measuring about 1-1/2" diameter above the wide, root base, continuing up the first 4 feet of the trunk, then from there, it gradually tapers down to about 3/4" diameter, over the next 3-4 feet. The tree is very well branched, with a nice shape too. I would guess that the tree is probably either at, or, very near, blooming-size. How old do you think these trees must be to produce a good display of flowers? Can I prune back some of the elongated branches, - after flowering - to induce dormant buds to break along bare wood so that more flowering twigs/branchlets are produced from the older, leaf nodes? Lord have mercy. This thread again. It was a hard winter AND spring. I lost a Japanese maple _I PLANTED IN LATE MARCH_ to the freezes that followed. It appears as though one of them caused the graft union to fail. I've never had that happen in my history of gardening. So a recently planted FJ in zone 6, with a colder than normal winter assuming poster is in eastern US which is a good bet, might not have been established enough to survive. I would still propose that, with accounts of them reaching semi-maturity in places like the Lake Ontario region, as well as growing in colder parts of Poland and Germany which I believe I've spotted on Instagram, the majority of these 'Gresham type'* magnolias, as I call them, are probably at least zone 6b hardy. "Zone 6" in even the eastern US would encompass a vast range of varying climates. Look at Tennessee, where winters are so unpredictable and unstable that CRYPTOMERIAS have been severely damaged or killed in recent years! So I could, for example, easily imagine a Felix Jury would grow to maturity in 6b at Moraine Farm in Beverly, MA, but be killed back to the graft union (i.e. killed) in 6b Tennessee. (I say this because I vaguely, vaguely remember seeing some possibly interesting deciduous mags planted at Moraine, but it was well over 15 years ago and I have no idea what they were, or if they are still there. There is, or was, a huge Umbrella Pine there, maybe the biggest I've seen including the one at Villa Taranto) * - perhaps 'Cornish type' would be a fairer term, because that was the first place interspecific hybrids of those SW Chinese deciduous Magnolias were made. I've often praised his contributions - whereas that was of course never reciprocated - only saying, at times, that his posts could be too pessimistic.
