Washout of soil around last year’s mini hosta plantings :( .

Clearing debris out of the garden (NOT walking on it!), I discovered more than a
few plants have had dirt washed away from their roots, assisted by the holes dug by aggressive squirrels.
The whole bed is on a slight slope: which you can’t even see, but the rain
knows. We had almost no snow cover and heavy rains off and on this spring /
late winter. The bed in question was
renovated with mostly new plantings and lots of new topsoil starting from a
year ago. Several mini hostas are the most affected. Some look like they are
standing perched up on their roots. The roots are not dry, though, so it looks
like most are still alive.

Is it best to: pack more soil around the roots and just hope
it stays there, with more rains likely this spring?

Or completely dig out and re-plant deeper to save them, and
have to re-plant later if I attempt to even out / raise the grade again?

With the washout, I don’t even know where the new soil line
should be. A few have small eyes maybe 1/3 of an inch high. Should I be
covering those? Or just try to cover the visible roots?

Thanks for your advice. It’s very discouraging. Mini hostas
cost a mint!
