Yeah, I dug mine up. In their place I erected two sections of split rail cedar fencing and planted the vine I really wanted right in the middle, a venus. Read that it can grow upwards of 20' in a season, the fence overall is about 25' long, and I'm keeping a two trunk vine that I plan to train across the rails in both directions. Been reading up on how to prune them, and so far I agree with the "let it grow however it wants the first year" so it gets a nice big root system, then start pruning it back to the main canes you want during the winter. I do have one question about this, although it won't be an issue for quite some time. I've read that if you let the vines touch the ground that they'll root themselves there (and that basically thats what you do when you make cuttings). Everything I've seen says to prevent this. Why? I've also seen where people say the best grapes will come from closest to the main trunk, presumably because thats the main source of water and nutrients to the plant. So why would you not want (after growing the vine large enough) to let the tips dip back down at the end to make an archway out of it? Give it trunks in the middle and each end to maximize roots and water and whatnot?

Oops, that should have been November 2010. That would have been a good trick would it not. ;-) I used the 6" pots linked below to plant them into. Those are actually hydroponic pots, but they worked just fine. The potting media was Farfard 52 mix IIRC. Acorns were planted in early April after cold stratification my my frig in moist perilite. Pots were place atop the bare ground and kept moist, but watered daily once the seedlings emerged. Fertilizer was Osmocote Plus, as it has all the major and micro nutrients. Due to daily watering, a few pellets were applied to each pot every 3-4 weeks to maintain nutrient levels. Each seedling pushed multiple flushes of growth over the growing season. In August due to extreme heat and drought, I placed each pots inside a 1 gallon pot to slow evaporation a bit. At that time the roots rapidly grow out the sides of the pots they had been in all summer. So the effect was that the seedlings had been air pruned all summer, had no dominant tap root, and had a dense root system at the time of going into the ground, and are up to three feet tall. Sarracenias take several years to grow noticably larger after the first year. If they are still alive, your doing a great job. I have had some Sarracenia hybrids that I germinated this January/February and they are still tiny too. The first year, dont expect them to grow more than an inch tall if that. Next year, they will grow maybe a couple inches in size at most. The third year, they will about double their size again. You should have adult plants in about 4-5 years if all goes as planned. You might not even be able to tell what species they are for a couple years if they are surprise seeds like I got. Sarracenia purpurea are one of the slowest growing Sarracenias, so patience is key.

I read this thread and kind of marvel. The effort people expend to grow plants in a hostile climate. I bought a $5 sago 40 years ago when I bought my house, it is over six feet tall The male flower is (like) two feet long, every year for at least the past 15 years. A flush consists of at least two dozen fronds , (or leaves) if you prefer. I have successfully raised and given away probably three dozen pups broken off from the parent plant. Most survive, maybe 80% but some don't. It gets cold here, we are at 1700 ft. elevation and freezes some years but I have never had a sago show damage from frost. Plumaria, that's another crap shoot, but the sagos do very well here. I have managed to keep twenty pups that are well established and in the ground. In other words, this climate is very agreeable for sagos and they are common all around here, seems like everybody has at least one? I'm not rubbing your nose in it here; I salute the effort to grow (what is almost a tropical), in a climate which is not suitable. Good luck.
