LED tv vs computer monitor for playing games

My son plays games on computer, which is not a gaming computer but in between gaming computer and oridnary computer. Is there any advantage of using a computer monitor vs a tv the specifications of of which are as under. thanks

Why are you asking this question? Are you having problems with Space in his room? Is it your son requesting a TV? Monitors are Typically Better than TV's, but the Current TV's are giving them a run for their money.

IMO, if I was to sit as a Desk, I'd prefer a monitor. But for gaming, the TV might suffice.

BTW, What you've pasted below is very difficult to Read and understand. It might be easier to read if you posted a Link to the Specs for the Monitor. Is it just the Specs for the Monitor you Posted or is that the TV too? I'm only seeing the monitor. Something like this: 21" Samsung 1920 x 1080

What characteristics of the TV do you think would be better than a monitor for computer use? I am thinking of the same tradeoff, but the only reason I would get a TV is because of its size; if 21" is big enough, get a monitor. I am looking at a vendor which sells both (bandh photovideo) and on their list of monitors, 21" is actually on the small side. They have 79 monitors with a size of 21", 115 23", 131 24", 162 27", and the largest, one which is 43", at $800. Our local Best Buy has a 40" TV for $199, so if it's big and cheap, then TV is the way to go.

Amazon already has a kindle that can surf the net the fire. I am posting from it now. The newer one today is just a newer model that can do more is all plus you can now pay for an Internet plan on one of the newer ones so its not just wifi only like the fire. I use this more than my laptop now and don't even take the laptop when traveling any more. I just love this little device and watch netflix on it every night in bed. I play games on it and read books on it. Can check out books on it from my local library, love that feature. I have also gotten a lot of free books from amazon. Mary

If budget really isn't a problem, and you can afford to wait a while, a new technology called SED is on its way. The result of a collaboration between Toshiba and Canon, Surface emitter Electron Display sets use electron emmission technology just like a CRT (so the picture quality is every bit as good), but since the electron emmission is from the surface rather than a gun, SED sets will have a flat screen form factor, something like 4cm or so. These will be the new standard for light, slim, flat screen displays. The picture quality will blow LCD and plasma away (real blacks, very short recovery time for pixels so no blur in fast images), and will use less power than LCD or plasma, too. And they'll be 1920 x 1080. Sorry to complicate your choice even more, but if you can wait these sets really sound like they'll be worth it. From what I've read production has already started, and sets will be available end of this year or early part of next. Pricing should be comparable to plasma, and the first models will be in the 40-50 inch range. If you need something right away, I personally like plasma. CRT is too small and heavy, LCD doesn't have true blacks (neither does plasma but it's better than LCD), and RP sets have too small a viewing angle. As for ED vs. HD, if you can afford it I'd go HD. I compared the Panasonic sets and, while the ED picture looked good, I saw "jaggies" around the text that wasn't there on the HD, and the HD sets seemed to have better depth. Personally I'm waiting, only because I can't currently afford a good plasma HD, especially when SED is less than a year away.

OK, we know you're impressed with your TV. When I have my woodstove going in winter, I turn OFF the TV because the fire is a lot more entertaining! There's enough trash on TV today and I surely don't wanna watch it on a huge screen too!

Not to throw you off track but see if you can find a Pioneer Elite. I have two in my house now and just purchased the Pro 60 and 50 inch monitors for our new house. To show home much I like these tv's, we have not even broken ground on the new house yet. I purchased the 50 inch from Eastcoasttv.com. They had one 50 left. The 60's are harder to find. Reviews on these sets are second to none.

A good computer monitor will be able to display higher resolutions than a inexpensive 1080p HD television set. If your son doesn't have a "gaming PC" with a $250+ graphics card, the TV resolution will not be the limiting factor.

Yes, arceeguy, but what about a 4K TV? I know of no computer monitors with that resolution.

There are 4K computer monitors, but many "run of the mill" PC monitors can run higher than 1080p, for example, my 23" monitor has a max resolution of 2560 x 1440 compared to 1920 x 1080 "full HD". That's 1.77 times the pixels. Not quite 4K 3840 x 2160 but noticeably more detail if your PC's graphics card can handle it.

Resolution isn't the only thing either. You have to look at screen refresh rates as a powerful PC can run games at 90+ frames per second. Most reasonably priced 4K TV's have a native refresh rate of 60Hz. (regardless if they claim 120 or 240, that's just a marketing gimmick) That being said, you really need to be a game geek to really care. As a casual gamer, I've played games on mediocre systems at 30FPS 1080p and it looked good and played good to me personally.

Cheap TV's will also have cheap LCD panels with uneven LED backlighting - creating a halo around the whole screen. The cheap panels will also blur more on fast action. I guess what it boils down to is what you want to pay for either. But a good TV will look great and can do more if it is web enabled. For a college kid where space is at a premium a TV may be the way to go.
