LED tv vs computer monitor for playing games

My son plays games on computer, which is not a gaming computer but in between gaming computer and oridnary computer. Is there any advantage of using a computer monitor vs a tv the specifications of of which are as under. thanks

Why are you asking this question? Are you having problems with Space in his room? Is it your son requesting a TV? Monitors are Typically Better than TV's, but the Current TV's are giving them a run for their money.

IMO, if I was to sit as a Desk, I'd prefer a monitor. But for gaming, the TV might suffice.

BTW, What you've pasted below is very difficult to Read and understand. It might be easier to read if you posted a Link to the Specs for the Monitor. Is it just the Specs for the Monitor you Posted or is that the TV too? I'm only seeing the monitor. Something like this: 21" Samsung 1920 x 1080

What characteristics of the TV do you think would be better than a monitor for computer use? I am thinking of the same tradeoff, but the only reason I would get a TV is because of its size; if 21" is big enough, get a monitor. I am looking at a vendor which sells both (bandh photovideo) and on their list of monitors, 21" is actually on the small side. They have 79 monitors with a size of 21", 115 23", 131 24", 162 27", and the largest, one which is 43", at $800. Our local Best Buy has a 40" TV for $199, so if it's big and cheap, then TV is the way to go.

Hi Susan, I would go with a widescreen. Widescreen is the future(which is now).Yes they do take up a little more space (width)but it's not much. The upside of widescreen is you can have 2 windows or webpages open side by side and be more productive.Granted widescreen is a little more expensive ,about $30 or $40 more then a"standard" monitor but it's worth the little extra money. Most people consider a 19"monitor the new standard size whether it'widescreen or standard.You can get a 19",20",or 22"widescreen for $209,$233,and $289 respectively. Hope this helps ya. OK, we know you're impressed with your TV. When I have my woodstove going in winter, I turn OFF the TV because the fire is a lot more entertaining! There's enough trash on TV today and I surely don't wanna watch it on a huge screen too!

David, the law should have been written to encourage the purchase of the most efficient lighting, (IE they get the credit for now many watts the lights save, instead of the bassakwards law they wrote where you add up the watts of the non-incandescent lights you bought and gets a "Credit for that"----so that encourages people to buy those non-incandescants (at the highest wattage), so they can use an incandescent (as computed by our idiots)! If you live in Calif, there is NO WAY, you can miss all the windmills out here, and there are credits (US & Calif), I believe for purchasing Solar Power. Let me give you another example of why I call these "So Called Thinkers", idiots. My wife works for a huge company, with TONS of computers. Just about all the computers are still using Cathode Ray Tube Monitors (There not nearly as efficient as LCD Monitors). There is NO incentive for companies to update monitors (Government wise--Especially CAlif Govt). In fact , you are penalized if you update the monitor, first the sales tax, but worse than that is a law our "Idjusts" passed---The so called "Monitor Recycling Fee". If you are a business, in Calif, You have to "Guesstimate" the number of monitors you will buy in the calendar year. Then you pay a Fee based upon your number (of course they Keep an Eye on ya). This law was passed when (due to the Terminator), no new taxes would be passed in Calif---or at least it would be difficult "Political wise" So the Legislature came up with all kinds of "Fees", this being one of them. They kept coming up with new fees until the "Hammer Fell". Monitor's that are recycled, make money for the recycler so it had nothing to do with the disposal costs of old monitors! One of the many reasons the State is Broke, is because we duplicate so much of what the Fed Govt is already doing, and I for one, don't Appreciate Our Idiots "Granstanding" and passing laws that have the opposite effect of maximizing Energy Savings!!! Maura, This is my office now and since I do have the lap top I can move it over to the right when I need more desk space or push it back under the shelf and reach out to type. I have even had two laptops on the desk at once repairing one while getting repair directions on the other. The printer is on the left under the fabric and lace cover I just push back when I am using it and my office supplies are in the drawer under the printer. The desk is really small and I took the top off of an old wood kitchen table and set it on top of the small desk to give me more desk top area but not a larger foot print on the floor. This way I was able to tuck in the little one drawer thing with the printer. The other little side table is an old old hospital bedside meal tray.I use it for many things. I know this is all a bit crowded but this room is multi functional. It is my office, sewing room ,craft storage space, mosaic workroom and my exercise room. The room is 10 foot by 10 foot. A good computer monitor will be able to display higher resolutions than a inexpensive 1080p HD television set. If your son doesn't have a "gaming PC" with a $250+ graphics card, the TV resolution will not be the limiting factor.

Yes, arceeguy, but what about a 4K TV? I know of no computer monitors with that resolution.

There are 4K computer monitors, but many "run of the mill" PC monitors can run higher than 1080p, for example, my 23" monitor has a max resolution of 2560 x 1440 compared to 1920 x 1080 "full HD". That's 1.77 times the pixels. Not quite 4K 3840 x 2160 but noticeably more detail if your PC's graphics card can handle it.

Resolution isn't the only thing either. You have to look at screen refresh rates as a powerful PC can run games at 90+ frames per second. Most reasonably priced 4K TV's have a native refresh rate of 60Hz. (regardless if they claim 120 or 240, that's just a marketing gimmick) That being said, you really need to be a game geek to really care. As a casual gamer, I've played games on mediocre systems at 30FPS 1080p and it looked good and played good to me personally.

Cheap TV's will also have cheap LCD panels with uneven LED backlighting - creating a halo around the whole screen. The cheap panels will also blur more on fast action. I guess what it boils down to is what you want to pay for either. But a good TV will look great and can do more if it is web enabled. For a college kid where space is at a premium a TV may be the way to go.
