Dug out a huge area... NOW the fun begins!
Comments (5)Well, I know this isn't what you want to hear, but roses wouldn't be my choice for right by the door. A trellis with a clematis or an annual vine like hyacinth bean or cardinal climber would be nice. An 'Annabelle' hydrangea would fit there, would be happy with an east exposure and give you great cut flowers. While the hydrangea is young, catmint at its feet would look nice (unless you don't like the smell). If you go ahead and raise the bed, other nice fragrant choices for edging would be lavender, germander or rosemary. A trailing edger that's really beautiful in bloom, but doesn't have a long bloom season, is veronica 'Bergen's Blue' or 'Georgia Blue.'...See MoreThe fun begins!
Comments (3)I use to have a rule that stated: No peeking at the catalogs until after Jan 1. I would put them all in a pile and just let them sit there until all the holiday stuff was over. No more. For one thing they keep arriving earlier and earlier each year. #2 I'm already sick of winter even though it hasn't officially started. Heck, a week ago I was picking lettuce in my garden and now we're covered in ice and it got down to 12 F last night. Yep, I've been reading through them each evening curled up in front of the space heater with a cup of tea. Can't help it. Kevin...See MoreSIGH..and the fun begins!
Comments (1)Aphids are just a fact of over-wintering/growing peppers indoors. I try to use the least radical methods. Ladybugs are best, as long as you spray a bit of moisture on the plants so the Ladybugs/larvae don't die. Soap sprays will work...but need to be re-applied. Basically, I rely on the vitality of my plants to grow new leaves faster than the aphids can eat. But this means ample sun/light and plenty of available nutrients, especially the micros. Also, the sooner you can begin hardening off your plants, the tougher the leaves will be. Commiserating, Josh...See MoreLET THE FUN BEGIN
Comments (96)Hudson--I'm usually up all hours of the night so I keep an eye.out-- but after a while you get to rely on the heater that you forget. I have a propane heater for backup My wife is terminal and this week she is in a lot of pain.so I get up to give her stuff. Just hope she can hang on till the first matters get here. She talks about home grown tomatoes.l used to grow Rutgers and she would go down the hill with two five gallon pals and carry them up and can or make juice--ain't nothing like home made tomato juice. Thanks antmary-- hope I can keep them going for awhile- expecting snow the first of next week so don't want to put them out just yet....See More- 7 years ago
