Cover old kitchen tile? Help!

I'm purchasing a home built in 1934. I'm no expert by any means, but the
house has old tile throughout the kitchen. You can tell it's been
painted over and over throughout the years. It's a horrid yellow color
now that I need gone. I don't want to add another layer of paint and I
don't want to strip it. I was thinking I could cover with beadboard,
fake brick/stone.... ideas? Advice? Help?!? The cabinets will be redone
and getting new countertop. Also adding peel and stick backsplash to
area of white tile.

I'm not a fan of the peel-and-stick backsplash, but if you are, then go for it. As for the tile that's there already, why not just demo it when the kitchen is being demoed, and install fresh drywall on the walls?

There have been several 1920's and '30s kitchen makeovers on this site. Feel free to post your plans if you'd like more input. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply eam44. Here is my situation: I'm 22
years old and this is my first home. Being a home owner at 22, I will
not have the funds necessary to tear out and repair. Being the age I am,
I don't expect to be here more the 5 years at the longest. This is why I
was considering something to just cover right now. I am not demoing the kitchen.

Thank you all -- searching for "low windows" was very helpful I even read of some people who left the windows and worked the kitchen around them without replacing or covering them up, and I really am excited to see what we can come up with keeping this in mind. We had one such window in the bathroom, IN the bathtub/shower stall. The previous owners had covered the wall with a shower curtain, but the wall/window just couldn't withstand all of the moisture. So, we did remove and replace that one with a smaller one, unfortunately. If we had another bathroom, I'd have loved to have kept that big, old window there right where it was, and designated that as a "bath only" bathroom. But I did keep the pink tub that was there and am so glad that I did. ;) Thank you al for yor input. I'm very excited about embracing the windows and working with, instead of against, them.

Have you gotten a bid on the heated floors, including the estimated cost to run them? I was surprised that none of the pros recommended it. Even the guy selling me a solar panel system disrecommended it (even though it would mean I’d buy more solar panels, he thought it wasn’t worth it). Might be different in your neck of the woods, but FYI. FWIW, in my 1940 bungalow, I hemmed and hawed on flooring (considering tile, old fashion Marmoleum etc) and finally landed on hardwood floors to match the adjoining rooms. When I was looking at tile and marmoluem, it limited my design choices for the rest of the kitchen; I had a hard time finding floor tile that looked good w/ the countertops I liked. The floor tile became too much of a statement and very limiting. The wood felt more neutral and warm (and it is warm, compared to tile. You don’t need to put radiant heat under wood flooors). If cost is an issue, you could buy top quality slippers for everyone in the family ;) I have some Ugg-knock-offs that are clogs. ;)

Oh no! My new Sconces do not cover old work hole on tile wall.

There isn’t enough tile left over, and there are 5 sconces in the room, so it would involve quite a bit to tile work. My project manager, who is a carpenter, suggest a wood piece to match the window frames & medicine cabinet but I think it would look too clunky. I spoke to a glass and mirror shop and they suggested custom acrylic mirror instead of a glass mirror (less fragile). I’m leaning towards this option. How large should the mirror plate surrounding the sconce’s backplate be. Will one inch around the perimeter work or should I go biggger?? Pencil polish edge or beveled? Acrylic MIrror

The kitchen is pretty nice looking (until you see the stove/fridge setup which isn't quite ideal). The vintage cabinetry is lovely (although probably not as nice to actually use as it is to look at).

I'd absolutely do something like beadboard. And beadboard would be better in the backsplash than peel and sticks. If you plan to sell in 5 years, peel and stick will reduce the value and overall impression of the house, but beadboard won't.

Invest in a few power tools for your beadboard--either from Harbor Freight if you think it'll be just a few projects, or good ones if you think you'll end up doing more DIY jobs.
