Kitchen Crown Molding Matching Issues

I'm getting kitchen cherry cabinets stained gray and matching moldings.

My GC asked me what I was going to do about moldings for the rest of the room. I want moldings in the kitchen because it's open concept into the dining room.

After researching several options, I figured my favorite look is to use regular moldings and just paint the molding to match the cabinets.

My issues are: Am I able to paint the molding over the cabinets to match a stain? And the moldings will be pine, if it's slightly mismatched, how bad will that look?

Does anyone have pictures of moldings not perfectly matching cabinet color?

I would see if I could get the cabinet company to stain the molding or sell you some stain. And I would not go with pine molding for that unless your cabinets are also pine.

So I guess I'd say:

If it's really a stain, it's not going to look the same when you try to paint it. You should stain both, and use the same wood for both.

I can definitely check to see if they will sell the stain but what do you suggest if they don't? Also, I feel like it's cost prohibitive to obtain cherry moldings. Will the visual difference be that significant in a molding?

That looks like a very common Kelleher molding. I would suggest taking the sample to an actual lumber yard or molding provider. I don't usually include Lowes or HD in that category. You can call and ask them if they sell Kelleher molding. You can also download Kelleher's catalog. Worse comes to worse, you can get it custom made. My favorite local molding house is SF Victoriana. They are willing to match older moldings, but I doubt you will need to do that. Here is a link that might be useful: SF Victoriana

This is the most common profile for crown. It will be available, just get the right height. I suggest a millwork lumber yard rather than a box store if you want to get primed real wood for a decent price.

It was standard pre-1940s to have a variety of moldings and other finishes in a house, descending in elaboration and expense. The species of wood may change, the finish may change, and the style changes as you go from guests to servants. It's called "architectural subordination". Public areas - The fanciest, to impress people with. This may be wood with great graining, or elaborately carved and painted (pale paint makes carvings show up well). Owner's areas - Usually just as fancy or almost so, because they deserve it. Guest areas, such as bedrooms and baths - Similar to owner's areas. Often painted trim in a tasteful pastel. Children's areas - quite plain, often painted for ease of care. Servants and utility - no more than needed to cover the gaps, and painted with a sturdy enamel. Would be plain poplar or pine, minimal shaping. If more than one door opens from a public area, the one used by the high-status people will have more elaborate trims ... a useful tip for navigating large old houses. One 1870s house I visited frequently in VA was a clear illustration of it ... even the staircase changed style from floor to floor. Bottom floor was all carved cherry and walnut with wide trims, above it was all oak and more carving but less elaborate, above that was the children's rooms which were quite simple oak for the era (we'd all die to get that!) and the servants quarters were basic flat board trims. Kitchen and tradesmen entry was very plain painted pine. The door from the elaborate cherry-paneled carved dining room to the butler's pantry and the kitchen beyond that was cherry, but only lightly carved and much narrower than the trim on the door leading from the dining room to the drawing room. It clearly said "unimportant people go through here". Often those doors were made to become invisible when shut, matching the panelling or wall color and having no trim at all. @Mark Bischak its The same on the Opposite end but longer, meaning there’s room to crown it. I’d like to keep it the same on the problem side. I can always reduce the register in size. Maybe I can keep the register there and just keep that “problem side” empty then start the crown as usual After the register? How would you elimI ate the U?

Most companies offer stain separately. That said it is not the best route.

All woods age differently, cherry darkens more (and faster) than any, pine warms to orange, they will not take stain the same.

In my own cherry kitchen I made some baseboard from cherry and used factory supplied stain. Years later they don't match simply due to the difference in the wood source. I'm removing it this year.

Poplar trim would stain better than cherry. In my last house, I had medium cherry cabinets. I purchased interior doors, casing and trim in poplar and had it stain matched. It looked great. Buying trim from a cabinet company can be very expensive. MJ&Co is right...the pine will yellow/orange with age.

I admit, I'm a little confused as to whether or not you're painting or staining. Staining, I think...?

I'd think that now isn't the time to cheap out.

"Oh, said the guest/picky MIL, "That would be so beautiful if only that orangey trim actually matched the cabinets." or "How trendy of you."

"OH," asked the mean neighbor, "Why you spent all that money on trim and your builder didn't even match your cabinets. Well, certainly is a good thing you like that 'eclectic' look. Honey."

Separate the room molding from the cabinet crown molding by a plinth block. Or, find the exact same profile crown molding available from the cabinet company in a paint grade molding and paint the room mold g your color choice. Or, buy all, of your molding from the cabinet company so it all matches. Or, don't do crown molding in the room at all. You picked the worst possible option out of a half dozen options.
