My dumb mistake: is my beautiful new tree salvageable?

I've had a Brogden avocado in the ground for close to two years now. It looks gorgeous and has grown like a weed (about 7 feet tall.) The trunk is about 1.5 inches wide. I wanted it to grow straight so I've staked it this entire time. I read that this is a bad habit after a year or so, so last night I removed the stakes and the tree promptly leaned over (the trunk wouldn't support the canopy.) I staked the bottom 1/4 of the tree so that the trunk would have movement but not the rootball. Well, when I got home from work the tree had snapped. I was able to restate it and tape the break (there is still bark attached to it), but I was wondering if I'm wasting my time. Should I attempt to let it 'heal' or simply opt for a new tree. I feel terrible right now. Such a dumb move.
