Ugh--cold sore!

I haven't had one of these for at least 10 years, but I felt something on my face and just looked in the mirror and a cold sore has arisen near my lip. In fact, I well remember the last one because it hurt a lot and lasted forever (weeks and weeks). I was teaching and consulting then and it was embarrassing. I also remember that it came at a time of stress and that other symptoms, such as aches and pains and fatigue, came with it. I don't have any of that stuff now, so I wonder what triggered it? Are there any home remedies or new cures these days I can try? Thanks!

Lysine, either pill form or as ointment. The pharmacist can help you.

    Zinc oxide also helps.

I use Zovirax which is a prescription. I use to get huge cold sores and a nurse friend told be about Zovirax and it has made a huge difference.

This is what works really well for me. The cold sore is gone in no time.

Releev. It's over the counter. I've tried Zovirax, it's a script. Not recommending it....none of the other stuff worked for us. Hope you feel better soon!

I use Denavir. It's a prescription that my dentist recommended and he can call in the script.

I always have two tubes. One is my bathroom at home, and one in my purse. As soon as I feel that tingle, I start applying.

I agree that if you wait too long you will wind up with the blister, However, the Denver will shorten the healing time. Best to not let it get to that stage.

Yes, L-Lysine. It's an amino acid that attacks the herpes virus. (Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex.)

To treat the pain and itch, aloe vera gel, preferably straight from the plant. It's amazing.

This is what I use Campho-Phenique Cold Sore Treatment. It dries the cold sore right up.

During the stressful times of life in the rv after the flood I got a terrible cold sore. I heard that garlic was a great cure. Well it sure is. I kept a peeled toe of garlic cut in half handy and I would put it on every time I thought of it. I was amazed. It took the pain away and it healed quickly.

"Garlic is naturally antimicrobial and can be applied directly to cold sores to reduce swelling, speed healing, or – if you can catch the blisters before they surface – to prevent them from forming altogether"

I have nothing in the house this evening but will hit the pharmacy tomorrow. This evening I'm trying a couple remedies I found online: wet black tea bag, honey. I will also try the garlic. Thanks. What a pain!

Some colleagues apply Camphor Spirit (Walgreens, CVS); dab on area w/ q-tip every few hrs, to treat oral herpes virus (HSV-1).

If within 48-72 hr, oral anti-viral meds (acyclovir x5d, valacyclovir or famciclovir x1d) can be prescribed to lessen severity & shorten duration.

Sorry to read of your cold sore's return. Winter cold and unhealthy food brings on cold sores for me.

Abreva or and vitamin A and Vitamin E have also worked for me. I break open the capsule of both the A and E and smear some on. Reapply at every tingle.

I also wash with face soap frequently, and dry gently but thoroughly. My soap is very mild and keeps the cold sore dry. It also seems to stop it from spreading as much.

Just careful with the garlic! I once put some through a press and applied it to my skin. Someone said you could absorb the healthful properties through the skin. It burned me and my skin got red and then peeled off just like with a sunburn. It's good to eat some garlic so it will fight the virus from within. Vit. C helps too.

The virus flares up when your under stress or your immune system is low. My sister has them if she eats too much sugar around the holidays. Lysine works well but stay off sugar too, get plenty of sleep and exercise to reduce stresses effects on your immunity so you can keep the virus in check.

This is your body saying it needs a little rest and fortification. Eat healthy and relax

I didn't press or juice it just cut it in half. It didn't hurt or burn at all.

What works well on fever blisters is "Abreva". It was a prescription ointment a couple of years ago, but is now available over the counter. We were introduced to it when a Doctor friend prescribed it for us. It can reduce the effect of a lip blister in about 2 1/2 days.

I always use Campho-Phenique liquid in a bottle. I have heard ear wax does the trick too.

I get them and they are terrible. I have naturally full lips and if I get one my lips swell and look huge. I have had GREAT success with Abreva. I use it every hour at the first sign of one and after I have gotten one. If I am overly stressed I also use it as a preventative measure.
