Question about Rex Begonia
Comments (5)Sorry I posted this in the wrong place then. Thank you for replying. Also sorry this seems to have turned in to a very long post. The top of the soil is very dry almost turns to rocks however it is wet right under the top part. Maybe a little to wet under the top but I did just water it before the picture. You can kind of see the wet part in the front left corner. I may have left it to long in between the last watering In fact I believe I did. It really is VERY bad soil. I hate it and want to change it but we want to move them to a 29 gallon after we move so I'm guessed the soil works for now. I believe the humidity in there was in the 70s last I looked The plants are growing nicely and the rex even have buds on them so there not to unhappy. I was thinking that the buds were the start of new leaves (hits head). Can't wait to see the flowers now.lol I think I remember reading that they really don't like water on there leaves so I use a syringe most of the time to water right under them without getting water on them. And they do have a light sitting right on top of them I turn on every morning when i get up and off every night before bed. They are also very close to the light only a inch away now. Sorry I did mean buds I have a problem with spelling and on top of that with righting down the right word even when I know how to spell it but I think in that case I was just thinking I really hope it isn't some kind of bug and typed what I was thinking at over the word I meant to type. They had a lot of scratches before I got them and more now it seems. My cat keeps falling in the tank as it's only a temporary home (tank and place of the tank) with a temporary plastic wrap led in front of the light. I just wanted to try a tank of plants and I'm a very impatient person when I get something in my head I have to try it ASAP. In the new house there going to be moved to a 29 gallon with vine plants on the outside of the tank, the TV under it and a fish tank under the TV or at least that's my idea so far. We have still yet to find a place. I'll check the soil around the plants to make sure maybe the spot right around them is to dry and the middle of the tank isn't. Thank you for letting me know I seem to have a problem telling when leafs look to dry. I however don't want to over water. I have killed plants by over watering and seems most believe it's easier to kill that way then under watering. I was thinking the Rex Begonia was a easy plant. It seems to like my tank better then most of the other plants. The Marble rooted in there from a cutting and has new leaves same with the Pellionia (got 3 little roots in water before moving in there). The others are just there really. I really seem to have a way with the more difficult ones even when I don't know they are difficult. lol I sadly killed my spider plants but have kept and revived some that are said to be harder. Here is a picture not long after I got the plant before I took it out of the cup I had it in for a few day/weeks (don't remember how long). I split 1 pot in to 3 and kept them in the cups to see how I wanted to do the tank....See MoreEveryone - your favorite Rexes?
Comments (8)What can I say. I love rexes with their audacious colors and many forms. 'Fireworks' has to be one of my favorites. Very showy and fairly easy to grow. 'Super Curl' (some sites have similar offerings called 'China Curl', 'Devils Paradise', and 'Chocolate Cream' is hard to beat for great colors and of course the curl. 'Can Can' (or 'Cancan') is an easy grower and has a silver sheen through summer and then almost turns red (dark pink) in fall (due to cold weather?). 'Deco Deviltry', 'Thor', 'Mr. Kartuz', 'Comtesse Louise Erdody' has that silver curl going for it, 'Sherry', 'Purple Curl', Purple Snow', 'Silver Dollar', 'Antoon's Variety', 'Stained Glass', 'Flippant', 'Helene Jaros', 'Wildfire' are a few that come to mind as being worthwhile. Some others that come to mind that I have or have had are 'Pink Champagne', 'Pink Diamonds', 'Blue Wings', 'Blue Boy', 'Venetian Red', 'My Good Friend', 'Alma Crawford', 'Peace', and some unknowns. 'Raspberry Curl', 'Raspberry Swirl', 'Lalomie' are winners in my book. They have become more mainstream (I had them in the past from Logees but lost them all). Now I have bought them locally except 'Raspberry Swirl' so I picked it up again from Logees. P.S. If you can buy them locally you generally will buy them bigger and cheaper but sometimes mail order is the last recourse. 'Escargot' is a difficult one for me to grow but the ones that I've seen grown to perfection are magnificent. A sport of it to me is a lot showier though - it is 'Nautilus' and may be a tad easier to grow. Also look at 'Fireflush' and 'Curly Fireflush'. Not sure if any of these are rex but they are in my book. Now with the GAC (Great American Cities) rexes becoming the rage, we have a wider choice of colors and patterns. Check Plants for Kids for these exciting rexes along with the Constellation series ('Libra', 'Taurus', and 'Capricorn'). Check Lyndon Lyon, Logees, and Rob's Violets for some more exciting rexes. Some of the ones I got from PFK are 'Seattle Twist', 'Atlanta Jazz', 'New Orleans Masquerage, 'Charlotte Chiffon', 'Savannah Pink', and 'Denver Lace'. From Rob's I got 'Maid Marion', 'Hallelujah', 'Vista', 'Pandora', and 'Beau Rouge' to name a few. Palm Hammock Orchid Estates (PHOE) and Kartuz have upright jointed rhizomes that look like they had some rex parentage in the past. Think of 'Little Brother Montgomery' and 'Connie Boswell' for example. I bought 5 new varieties from Kartuz in the fall and I have a huge leaf variety from PHOE that is hard to beat for color. It is 'Deco Twirl' but I bought it in person at PHOE two years ago. They also had 'Frances Valentine' which was smaller in stature but what wild colors. Unfortunately I lost that one. I move all mine outdoors for summer where they usually put on an outrageous show from August through October. Now if we could just get some of those exciting Japanese rexes, wouldn't life be grand?...See MoreBuying a beautiful terrarium
Comments (6)I saw a very nice one at The Bombay Company. Insanely expensive though! Of course it will go on sale at some point, but still, I think it was $600. That's Canadian, but even so, it's still too much to pay for something that size (and that quality. Trust me, I used to work there), so I wouldn't buy it. I think that someone on the orchids forum got two very nice Wardian Cases at Sam's Club. They were nice and big, and very cheap. You could also get one custom-made by your local stained-glass artist (no need to use stained glass though; it looks pretty, but only blocks light)....See MoreSmall Red Rex
Comments (9)There is a fine line on watering bare rhizomes - too wet (won't dry out) will cause rot and too dry will kill them too. Some sellers grow in a lot of peat (might be good for a greenhouse) but the unsuspecting buyer can water it thoroughly and find out that it won't dry out after it is too late. Removing the root ball and placing it on newspaper is one way to wick away excess water. The old adage is to insert your finger an inch deep in the pot to check for moisture (I find that extreme but some pots I do resort to at least feeling the surface). If you can feel moisture at that depth then don't water, if dry to the touch then water thoroughly. You may find in your case (drying out rapidly) that a baggie or a clear cup over the plant will do wonders....See Morelinnea56 (zone 5b Chicago)
