I remember shopping at Costco last year or the year before and they didn't have any for weeks and the cashier said it was a bad crop. I was thinking the same thing but didn't see anything online. So thanks sushipup - a little insight for me.

One head is going for $2.69 and a pack of three romaine hearts was $6.99.

I don't know, but our store had no green leaf lettuce last week. They had a lot of red leaf lettuce heads and of course all the bagged stuff and the romaine looked expensive. So I ended up with a large head of red leaf which is fine for all the salads I make.

Iceberg is .89 head.

Romaine is 4 bunches for $2.00

Head lettuce/iceberg has been running about $1.49-$1.59 here for weeks and weeks, makes me crazy to pay that much ;0) I've been buying spinach for salads instead (for at least some nutrition), and Wednesday picked up package of 5 'artisan romaine hearts' at Costco for $3.49.

I have lettuce coming in my garden now, red oak leaf type. I hate paying high prices for something I can grow my self usually year around. When buying at the store I get Romaine which is the cheapest and keeps the longest, 3 or 4 big heads for $2. DH likes spinach for his salads instead, so buys the big tubs of it.

I have snow in my garden :(. I had a spinach and watercress salad today - it's cheaper.

I haven't noticed a increase, but I pay a bit more anyway for washed lettuces.

Never a shortage of lettuce in our area. All kinds always available although the price varies, I think the most I paid for a head was 2.29 a while back, last week it was 1.00

Upstate eastern NY iceberg is $1.99 at Price Chopper. :-(

We seldom buy iceburg lettuce, there's no nutritional value in it, although the crunch is nice. We buy the 3-pack romaine hearts when on sale. I noticed they were $6.99 yesterday, and that was at Food Basics, a lower priced grocery store. I was shocked. Typically they sell for $1/head when on sale, so a 3-pack for around $3.

One small head of Boston/Butter lettuce is just right for us two. It's about $3/lb., but it's so light that a head is under a dollar. Not a *lot* of nutrition, I haven't bought iceberg in a long, long time.

Exactly right, the iceberg lettuce has almost no nutritional value. The only time I have eaten it is when served a 'wedge' type salad and it's great for that. I mix spinach leaves in my salads a lot, and use spinach for my green drinks with kale, fruit, etc.

Grocery store lettuce goes up in price as quality goes down, and goes down in price as quality goes up. Supply and demand, I guess.

I'm looking forward to locally grown lettuce in the farmers' market. I don't know if it's local conditions, or just the fact that the heads haven't traveled across country to get here, but it tastes soooo good!

We buy iceberg lettuce for the dog (it helps with his weight since he eats breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus snacks). It helps calorie wise. In Canada we have been paying $2.99 a head - and sometimes it is just so bad that I will not buy it.

As Jasdip noted, Plan B is to buy the 3 packs of romaine (he likes the crunchy parts) - but finding them not half rotten is proving to be difficult. Price as Jasdip noted has been on the increase.

Sometimes I will buy Dole's Classic Iceberg Mix if it is dated far enough in advance and is not moldy looking due to not being properly dried prior to packaging. This is an issue with many of the boxed lettuces, spinach etc.

Of course our dog does prefer ARUGULA! It is a good and bad thing that he will eat anything (including unflavoured meds). Kind of scary though.

When I buy the 3 packs of romaine, I give our pup the crunchy parts and my husband the non-crunchy parts. Kind of me I know.

Weight control in dogs is simple. Give them less food, they'll lose weight, no fillers or empty calorie foods are needed. They can't open the cupboard or go to the fridge.

My comment and the one preceding it were both about dogs.

Cats are different but I think most can adjust to a reality not of their own preference as needed, as well.

I've known dogs that make short work of opening fridge doors and cabinets. Baby latches and heavy duty Velcro required, and sometimes even those were foiled. We had a cattle dog (heeler) the was a quick learner. She opened drawers. She could be taught a new trick in 10-15 minutes.

Elmer, you have never met my dog who has paws like a raccoon. As posted by gyr_falcon we would need child proof locks on all of the cupboards and drawers to try and keep him out of them - and even then he would learn by simply watching and learning from us how to open them.

A brilliant dog can be difficult.

I realize that your comment was about dogs not cats, but we have had cats as well who would help out by opening the high cupboard doors and pitching the food into our dogs' mouths. We have a tendency to adopt smart dogs.

Our dog was starved as a pup and has never forgotten it. He is the worst hoover our vet has ever met - worse than our hounds.

Oh, and he is not overweight. At least I hope not. We will need to weigh him at the vets. He is currently on 2 prescriptions eye meds applied 2 times a day plus an OTC eye gel that must be applied 3 times a day. The only way he will be bribed is to offer him a few pieces of his holistic kibble.

He needs his treats. The only way to make him loose weight is to reduce his kibble - and he only gets 1/3 of a cup of Fromm Four Star in the a.m. and p.m. plus his special holistic cookies every morning and his "I have been in the car" special treats - plus his lettuce, plus, plus, plus.

He turned 13 on April Fool's Day - but a Fool he is not. I doubt anything is going to change. In some ways it is good that he is so food obsessed otherwise applying the drops (which burn his eyes - I asked the specialist) would be very hard.

eccentric, pet-proofing cabinets and keeping them away from food is trivial compared to child-proofing a house. Animals can't open cabinets and containers properly secured.

As with the other recent thread about kids and picky eating, your pet has no choice but to have eating habits based on what you give him and when. Pets will "refuse" food for only a short period of time, after which the hunger urge will lead them to eat whatever is placed before them. Yes, some have fussy stomachs and the right food that's tolerated need to be found. But as has been discussed before, regular pet food of the owner's choice that the animal's system is happy with is all that's needed.

Our dog is insanely food-fixated too and gets "treats". But treats get subtracted from and set aside from a daily food measurement that keeps her healthy and thin. They're part of, not in addition to. She'd eat herself to death if given an opportunity (a large-chested breed prone to fatal bloat if given too much food) but just as if it were poison, her food is secured in such a way that she has NO possibility of getting to it. It's not hard to do.
