Could someone please tell me why I need Blue Ray?

You don't "need it" unless you want to play Bluray disks. Just like you don't "need" a turntable unless you want to play records.

It was designed to supersede the DVD format, in that it is capable of storing high-definition (720p and 1080p) and ultra high-definition video resolution (2160p).

DVD can't do that.

It is safe to assume the old DVD player is connected with three RCAs so it will hook up just fine on the one of the HDTV's auxillary ports. Both of mine did. Even the VCR (play only) did on the computer room set. If an owner is to buy something new ignore the lingering DVD stock and purchase a Blueray. DA

cheerful1, The reason why you are seeing the two horizontal black bands (one on to, one on the bottom), is because the TV is set to one of the screen modes available. read the instruction on page 21, and on page 29. First try the following (look at the remote's buttons) page 21: TV on, watch a show. Now look at the WIDE button, which is located just below the POWER button. Press and release the WIDE button repeatedly, and see what happens to the screen. (Keep in mind that if the TV is receiving a 720p or 1080i signal, Normal can't be selected). The screen should go from wide to wide zoom, normal, full, and zoom. You can also change the Screen Settings (page 29), from Wide, to Normal. See if this works for you. To change the setting to you liking, you can select "Custom." In the custom mode you have more control of the screen than on the rest to the settings. And finally, if you want to watch DVD's and provide the best signal possible from a DVD to the TV, read my post relating to signal upconverting via HDMI above. I know that digital cable is great, but to watch a DVD movie HDMI connection to the TV is the best from the following: best = HDMI, second best = component cables (red, green, and blue plugs), third = S-Video cable, worst = the yellow, white,and red cables. As the BlueRay and top of the line DVD players belome more popular, the existing DVD players/recorders (with signal upconverting via HDMI) prices will drop, and that's when I will buy one of these. But for the moment, I have a $99.00 DVD player with signal upconverting via HDMI, and the DVD movie signal quality is great. Since I don't have cable, i enjoy watching movies from this DVD player. The signal is crystal clear.

I am sorry i seem to have been a bit misinformed i was surer i was right ,but the older 1.0,and 1.1 should still play futur discs it will just lack the full use of special features,i just read this article on cnet. (The easiest way to avoid all these headaches is to buy a Profile 2.0 player, which is currently the most future-proof option there is. In particular, we recommend the PS3--not only is it the best Blu-ray player according to our reviews, but it also has traditionally been updated with new features before other Blu-ray players. Additionally, because the PS3 has such a fast processor inside, we've found that special features just work better, with faster load times and smoother playback. If you're the kind of person that never fiddles with special features and you've found a great deal on a Profile 1.1 player, there's no reason not to buy it as long as you know what you're giving up. Profile 1.1 players should have no problems playing back future Blu-ray movies, you're just won't be able to get additional content online. Profile 1.0 players are increasingly rare these days, so unless you find a fantastic deal, you can probably find a Profile 1.1 player for a similar price.) for some morer info check out cnet for yourself ,again sorry for the bad info,will not happen again!

Just want to add that, in looking further, I did find the following remote (see link below). I haven't finnshed researching it yet, but it appears it will do what I want---and much more. It also costs much more than the other remote I was looking at. The concern that prompted my first post here was simply being able to control turning on the TV, changing channels, and increasing or decreasing the volume of the TV when the cable box is in the cabinet, behind closed doors. My understanding is that I need an RF remote to accomplish that. The remote referenced at the bottom of this thread apparently will do this. It's also approximately $180 more than the first remote I found. So DH and I will have to determine whether it's worth laying out the additional dollars to decrease the number of remotes we need to use. Probably going to have to table this decision until we get further along building our home and see how many and how expensive unexpected expenditures we have. I certainly don't expect you to make the decision for me, but can you confirm that the two Harmony remotes I have linked---one in this post and one in a post above---will enable me to communicate with at least some of my components within a cabinet with the RF remotes and the hub that comes with each of them? However, when we had a DVD player about 3 or 4 years ago, we found that we could not play the new regular DVD's, not Blu-Ray, but new releases. We could not get sound, only video. I asked around here, and it seems that there were "upgrades" to newer machines. If you start renting DVDs and have trouble playing them, then your machine may be outdated.

You don't need it of you don't care about picture quality. On the other hand, if you want to have the highest definition picture and have a tv capable of displaying it, then it would be worth getting a Blu-Ray player (you can get a good quality one for $50-$100). I replaced my old DVD player with a Blu-Ray player about a year ago and the difference i picture quality and detail was quite obvious.

I've never had any problems with any of my Current DVD Players, playing any DVD's (Newer or Older). We have 2 x Sony 5 Disc 5.1 Surround Sound Systems (All-in-One) and a Philips DVD Player, all are older units, nothing New. None of these players are capable of playing the Blu-Ray Discs!

Many, Many years back, we had a GE DVD Player (our first DVD Player). We ran across one DVD, that no matter what we did, it wouldn't play Disney's "The Kid" with Bruce Willis. This was a Brand New DVD Player and the DVD had just been released. We retuned the DVD 4 x before finally giving up on it. I even went as far as taking the GE DVD Player to Wal-Mart, so they could see that the DVD wouldn't Play. It played on the (their) Same Model GE DVD Player on the store shelf, but wouldn't play on mine. This DVD Player was a Gift and wasn't purchased at Wal-Mart, so I couldn't return it to Wal-Mart. Never did try returning it, it played every other DVD just fine!

We do however have an LG Blu-Ray Player that we just started using this past summer. Hooked it to my New Sony 5.2 Surround Sound Stereo Receiver. We also have 2 Sony PlayStation 3 Gaming Consoles (1 x Fat and 1 x Slim) that have Blu-Ray Players Built-In.

BTW, Blu-Ray is Backwards Compatible and will play all your DVD's.

One reason you might want to use a Blu-Ray player is if you get movies at your local library. In our case, frequently a movie will be on the shelf as a BR disk but the regular DVD copy is checked out. I agree that the BR video quality is better.

My Blu-Ray unit is several years old. It supports NetFlix streaming so is connected to my WiFi and has auto-updated its firmware several times to support newer Blu-Ray features/discs.
