I Can't Look Fast Enough!
Comments (1)I KNOW!!! I was gone for the weekend. To Kentucky where the roses are blooming...picture me dying of jealousy here. Walked the yard Sunday evening and stuff was blooming that wasn't even budded when I left. I figured it was because I hit everything with a shot of 20-20-20 fertilizer before I left....See MoreWondering if I'll ever have enough worms
Comments (24)Yikes- careful! Really depends on how big your bin(s) are & how much you'll feed. I have a very large tray-type bin that I keep indoors (4 trays). We are only two people, and don't actually produce that much worm food. I constantly have extra in the freezer. I bought 1 lb. of worms to start, and my population exploded very quickly, so much so that I started having an overpopulation problem. Worms were escaping from the bin due to overcrowding (had eliminated all other possible problems). Had to give A LOT of worms away. Right now I have a very small population (due to a sad mishap; boo), but I have no doubts that the population has already started growing again (as I'm seeing more younger (smaller) worms), and will be a strong vibrant community in a reasonable amount of time. Yes, you need more worms to compost more food, but a pound or two of worms will reproduce quickly & exponentially in the right conditions; so I highly recommend not overbuying! I highly suggest under-buying, using your outdoor heap for scraps that you can't use initially so as to not overfeed in the beginning, and let your population grow on it's own; once that has happened you'll have PLENTY of worms to process all your scraps. They'll probably also be better adjusted to your particular bin environment that way too....See MoreI can't find the crown! And maybe your hosta laugh of the day?
Comments (2)whoa.. you are really over thinking this ... the pips MUST BE coming out of the crown.. where ever it might be ... repot it.. leaving the crown an inch above the soil ... so the crown will dry out.. stop the rotting ... perhaps repot it.. in a month or so ... i would guess.. that bruce would have told you to throw the whole thing into bleach .... i never liked doing that.. they all died ... but most likely.. they were dead before i tried to do it.. lol ... others can discuss that ... i also never really liked cutting into already rotting plants.. all you would be doing is opening wounds in unrotted flesh.. for the rot to spread.. but.. if it would pull apart.. why not ... bonsai is a system of pruning roots a couple times a year... to force dwarfism on a plant ... i dont know what you would accomplish giving the roots a haircut ... aw hell ... run it over with the car.. and repot it.. and be done with it .. lol .. ken...See MoreHostas I can't grow
Comments (13)Holes in the leaves is usually slugs. You won't see them. Sprinkle slug pellets onto the crown and the slugs will stop doing damage. I do this early season as my hostas come up. I sprinkle slug pellets onto each plant. Mid-season some plants will show holes in the leaves, so I sprinkle pellets again and that takes care of it. If you get a plant from a neighbor who does not do this, immediately sprinkle slug pellets once the plant is in the ground. I used to get hostas from an across-the-street neighbor whose garden was heavily infested with slugs. It would take seeral sprinklings to kill them all. Here's a link to figure out whether you have cutworms or slugs. https://www.hometalk.com/3853632/holes-in-hosta-leaves-it-might-not-be-who-you-think?expand_all_questions=1...See MoreSophannah
