Decorating the open space above kitchen cabinets
Comments (21)Redfeather, I lived most of my life in TX and I agree that silk greenery on top of the cabinets (and lots of it) seems to be a TX thing. We moved to the Carolinas 2 years ago and my kitchen felt so stark I put up several items on top of the cabinets to soften the look and make the kitchen feel more homey. Some of my neighbors have left the tops of their cabinets bare, but their kitchens have backsplashes with some visual interest. Personally, I like the look of the plants and I think it's a matter of personal preference and decorating style. I think your pottery would look nice grouped with greenery or baskets or some wrought iron pieces. I am posting a couple of my kitchen photos (hopefully no one will tease me too much :) ) Please disregard the tupperware and Halloween buckets! I also wanted to add that my original intent was not to put so much stuff on top of the cabinets and just do a few groupings instead. Personally, I feel like grouping smay work better in kitchens with taller spaces above the cabinets - but that's just my 2 cents : )...See MoreHow do you deal w high ceilings in kitchen?
Comments (28)desertsteph: Thanks for posting those pics - what a unique collection! From your screen name I gather you live in the desert? Jterrilynn: Cruising is a great way...then you can get off the boat at each port & explore. Valdez is a huge tourist attraction so be sure & choose a cruise that has Valdez as a port of call. Even though I hate the idea of being on the water, I'd rather do that than drive the 100's of road miles. With all the RV's on the road, it can drive you bonkers. Oh, & when someone up here says, "It's just up the road a piece.", ask, "OK, just exactly how many miles are you talking about?" Our 'up a piece' can be in the 100's LOL Hope you go on that cruise! :) I know what you mean about getting the 'rejected' screen. I've had to fight with that, too. I usually have to change the title of the thread to make it work. laurainlincoln: Sap buckets - how charming! Patina can really mask the dust, eh? :) Dusting is one of my most hated chores...I'd much rather clean a dirty bathroom! Thanks, everyone, for your great input. :)...See MoreOpen space above cabinets
Comments (8)We considered new cabinets but honestly, it would cost a small fortune to get the quality of cabinets we have now and if they went to the ceiling, I wouldn't be able to reach anything in them, even on a step stool (I'm less than 5' tall.) I actually like the open look and would only add a few items if any at all. I don't want stuff I have to climb on my counter top to clean either but wondered if nothing at all would make it look unfinished. We are going to add some molding and I could use a shade darker paint that we used in the bordering family room. Thanks all....See MoreHow best to fill the space above cabinets with decor?
Comments (30)"No one has mentioned so far that the dust that shows up above kitchen cabinets is GREASY dust. Super yucky, and hard to get off." Gas stoves are the worst for this...but my experience was it only appeared directly above the stove. For sure the type of hood/ventilation one has would make a huge difference. I just packed #1DDs kitchen for a move to a new home. The open shelving above the stove top was GROSS along with everything on it. No where else. My crystal, described earlier in this thread, was never greasy. Here in our 'forever' home I have a soffit that holds a set of God Bless America plates. They get cleaned once a year and the only ones with any grease are directly above the electric stove top, and it's not a big deal. Dawn soap is your friend!!...See MoreHillside House
