Comments (1)Moni, I'm glad you are getting some rain there because is sure has been hot and dry lately. I hope you get a good rainfall. I hope we get some rain here sometime today or tonight. The cold front really hasn't reached us yet, but I think it should arrive in the next few hours. (The cold front was supposed to be here shortly after 7 a.m., but you know how that goes.....we are still waiting.) Although we had a lot of rain (mostly in one day) in April and May, everything has dried up here. We've had 3 grass fires in the last 2 days, and some of my neighbors are telling me their wells are dry or very close to drying up. Some creeks are dry too, but ours still has some water. I've noticed a lot of folks here are not watering their veggie gardens at all....just letting them dry up and die. I have been watering mine, but can't afford to keep it up all summer at the current rate. So, I'm desperately hoping for rain here today or tomorrow! Dawn...See MoreWoo Hoo!!! I caught him!!!
Comments (18)The chicken wire is an interesting thought and may be worth a try. I found another branch chewed off yesterday on one of the plants I didn't cover with netting (I ran out). It rained yesterday morning and the night before, which I had hoped would deter the determined little buggers, but apparently not. In desperation, I bought some hot pepper wax spray yesterday. I thought that it might at least be a bit better than sprinkling cayenne pepper around the plants, since they can't inhale the powder up their noses. I have heard that blood meal is a good deterrent but have also heard others say that it didn't work for them. My neighbor is fertilizing organically, though I am unsure what he is using. He says that he is not having trouble with the squirrels this year, but he has in the past. I think it's because they have found my plants...they are coming from a hole dug underneath the fence from his yard into mine!!! I would block it up, but it is likely a waste of time, since they can either make a new one or climb right over the fence. Oh, and bdobs....my teenager should be afraid...very afraid...but I'm certainly not telling him that! :) I'll cross my fingers on the pepper spray, get some more netting, and perhaps buy some chicken wire and blood meal. I think I will end up spending more money on squirrel and rabbit protection than anything else!...See Morewanted: woo hoo! i got two boxes!!!
Comments (27)I stole my friend's tortilla press (well, asked her to buy me one from the Latino places she haunts, LOL). Like granjan, she showed me that the tortillas were pressed in between plastic - she used cut-open ziploc bags. I make both flour and corn tortillas for the kids. Comments (8)Congratulations! I had a similar experience a year or so ago - I was taking a Saturday morning walk in my neighborhood and came across a neighbor having a yardsale. She had yarn, so I started going through to see what she had that I could put to good use. She had bought a lot of single skeins of a particular yarn in almost every color, so although there was a lot of yarn, there wasn't a lot in a color. I ended up purchasing 60+ skeins for less than $40. When I brought it home, I stored the yarns in similar colorways and realized that this would be how I could use them. All of the yarns were 100% wool suitable for felting. I have simply stranded colors together when I knit and then when the piece is felted, it's a very lovely "wash" of color. You could also purchase enough yarn of the same color to run along with your "found" yarn, since felting usually needs two yarns worked together  and would give you less variegation in your finished fabric. I recently "lost" several bags to my mother - she came out for a visit and spied a couple of colorways and took them home with her. While she was visiting, she made a lovely felted bag (I wish I had taken a photo). She embellished the outside with buttons from my button stash, and then lined it with some lovely fabric we found at the quilting store, and even added a little zipper pocket. Because the yarn, zipper, and buttons came from my stash, only cost was for the fabric lining. I think I mostly see felted bags, but there's some darling patterns for felted caps or cloches, slippers, coffee cup cuffs - lots of little things that can use up the bits and pieces of yarn that you have....See More- 9 years ago
