casement window repair/won't shut
Comments (1)Hi, If I'm understanding you, you will need to remove the glass, remove any other debris from the joint (paint, putty, crud) and clamp the sash back so that the open joint is tight again; apply some glue to the joint. The problem you could run into is that with the glass removed, you may lose the reference to squareness which will later affect how the sash fits. If possible, the glue-up would be done with the unglazed sash temporarily reinstalled and shimmed into the opening. It would then just be a matter of replacing the glass and repainting the sash. If this casement has interlocking metal weatherstripping, you'll have to make sure that it is in good kit as well. Casey...See MoreRepair, Don't Replace, Old Wood Windows
Comments (154)Mary, Are you referring to window restoration or just sealing up some existing windows? The two are going to be very different type professionals. If it it just sealing up some exterior trim on windows, a decent painter can do that. If its window restoration, that is a different ball of wax. Window restoration is a very niché marketplace. The best thing to do is start with a Google area search near your home and especially in those areas that are more heavily concentrated in older homes. Next would be to ask around any of the historic districts that are in your area and see who they might have a list for. Hope this helps....See MoreAnderson window repair?
Comments (2)For the design of the house I think I to keep with 4-lite casements with the 2 outer windows pivoting open. Got the best deal from Window World. Checked them out with the BBB and they have an A+ rating for the franchise I want to use. Would be $999 each for a basic 96 X 63 4 lite window without a new frame and capping. I would put in better ones if I were keeping the house, but I'm not....See Moreare these worth trying to repair, or bite the $ bullet?
Comments (6)Your best bet is to post this in the “Windows” section. I unfortunatly cannot offer any knowledge in your window brand, but in my findings, the window warranty is indicitive of the quality of window. Windows from the early 90’s, especially builder grade have not fared well, especially with the beginning of energy efficiency and tight homes that didnt breathe. There are definitely some quality vinyl windows out there. You just need to determine what is most important to you. Wood almost always looks nicer (from the inside), quality vinyl will almost always have better efficiency numbers, and fiberglass will look really nice from the exterior. Most importantly, the install normally matters the most so make sure you find a quality installer....See MoreLauren De Buyer
