Medium for citrus trees in smart pots
Comments (0)Hi all, just bought a Moro blood orange, Improved Meyer Lemon, and Washington Navel orange today from Four Winds. I plan on putting them into 7 gallon Smart Pots for the next couple years and they will be sitting directly on dirt. I plan on using Foliage Pro for fertilizer, but am having questions about which medium I should be using. Was originally planning on using Al's gritty mix, but I fear that with the drainage and breath-ability of Smart Pots, that the medium will dry out too quickly. I have also read here on Gardenweb that if they are in smart pots and on the ground, the ground will act as a wick, pull moisture away and facilitate good drainage. So therefore, can I use another, more moisture retentive medium like Pro-mix? Anyone have experience with dwarf citrus in Smart Pots? Thanks, Dan...See MoreFruit trees in Smart Pots, Gritty Mix?
Comments (3)Thanks Phebe. I originally was going to go with an all dry Japanese inspired garden, but then the fruit & veggie bug bit me, so I am trying to find a balance between stuff and negative space. I suspect that balance will always be shifting... Al, I'll keep my eyes on the roots as I progress down this Smart Pot adventure. Six new Dave WIlson low-chill fruit trees: Royal Lee Cherry, Minnie Royal Cherry, Red Barron Peach, Saturn Peach, Mid-Pride Peach, Arctic Star White Nectarine. Potted up into Smart Pots filled with UniGrow potting soil, left the root ball intact and just nestled it in the middle with the potting soil packed around it. I'll be doing more research and getting some root training, so in the Spring I can repot and prune, possibly using Al's Gritty Mix. Comments (34)I got some first-hand evidence of how the Smart Pots seem to work. I had transplanted a Quercus michauxii seedling around April 1 into a Smart Pot. It was bitten off by a critter this weekend, so I decided (since I have more michauxii seedlings than I need anyway) to just sacrifice it, and dump and check out the root system. There was one long, slightly "thick" root going down at an angle off the air-pruned tip of the taproot that had reached the bottom and worked its way into the fibers. The root had not emerged from the outside of the pot, but instead seems to have gotten "stuck" there. No side roots had branched off of this particular root yet, but I imagine that the Smart Pot works both by airpruning AND 'trapping' of the root tip....See MoreBest soil for fruit trees/veggies in Smart Pots/fabric pots
Comments (1)5-1-1 mix works pretty well. Yes, it dries out fast but why not just water it every day? I prefer roottrapper over smart pots though. Doesn't dry out as fast and white covering keeps root system cooler. Here is a link that might be useful: roottrapper...See MoreSammers510
