Comments (19)Hey Kat, this is turning out to be a good August. Lots of rain, plenty of mild and dry days too. Years ago, when I did some serious big gardening, I used to go out to the country and buy a bale or two of oat straw, which I saved until late Oct. Then would loosly take apart and lay over the carrots. Mostly, the carrots made it thru the winter, and got sweeter from the cold. My four surviving tomatoes are coming on strong and healthy. This year, the best taster is Old German. Other years it may be a different one. Soil and water and sun conditions play a huge part in the flavor of the fruit, I think. Comments (15)Martin, are you using lights and fans or have your cuttings in a very sunny window that gets hot on sunny days even in winter? Mines do. I have Acadama and even that dries out for my cuttings very fast. If I don't water them, at least the very surface of them, they shrivel. I found that depending on the type of conditions and mixes they are rooted in, depends on what we do to water them. For me it can become very tricky without losing a few here and there. So frustrating. That is why I will try over and over again with so many cuttings of the same plant until I get it just right. I think I have it right now because all 3 remaining of the 7 cuttings of my Langlois that I took are finally rooting and hanging on now. I had to cut my mother plant back so much to get at least three to root that I almost lost it( It's no wonder they are hard to find and very expensive if found. Now I wonder how many here have been successful at rooting the ones that are important to them of the one cutting they spent big bucks on, or spent years trying to find that rare one. This I know that rooting the variegated forms with lots of white is almost impossible of not done correctly. One has to keep a close eye on them that they don't get too much water, too much humidity, too much cool weather, not enough light, or not enough water or not enough air movement or too much sun. Rooting either comes very easy for some, especially the rarer species, or a constant vigilance for others. I would say I am the later half.lol Great job and thanks for your experience as well as every one else. Comments (23)Black raspberries? YUM! ! ! Haven't seen those in many a year! Grew them on the farm when I was growing up. Red raspberries were added during my early teens. No raspberries at all down here in South Texas, until a few years ago, when the reds started showing up in the store. Ridiculously expensive, but once in awhile I splurge on a half pint, just to indulge myself. It's funny, when we first got them on the farm, I thought they were really good, better than the black, But now I would much rather have the black, if I could ever find any! ! ! I did no cooking or baking this year, a first time ever. But we had our Christmas yesterday at Grandson's house, 165 mi. drive from here. I went up early yesterday morning, and came back last night. He decided that getting myself and his Dad there was enough of a task for me, but I still felt bad about arriving with no food to contribute to the dinner. 7 years agoI'm seeing more and more buds every day. There are a lot of blind shoots from the wacky weather. There are less than last year though and for that I'm thankful.
