Spray schedule for stone fruits?

Hi, I've got no special interest in organic gardening and would like a fairly straightforward spray schedule for stone fruits and apples. I don't mind spraying multiple times, especially the fungicides, but I do need it spelled out for me. A lot of these guides online show people spraying various compounds 12-15 times per growing season. What do you do?

The question is what are the problems your trees have. Apples/ pears are pomme fruit. They have their own diseases. Peaches/ nectarines/ cherries/apricots are stones fruit with their own issues.

spraying for problems your trees have is better than spraying just in case.

Cornell's, Michigan's State's and Penn State's extension services have great infp about how to manage fruit trees for home growers. Starting with those is better than any sources on the web.

Since I am in SE WI, perhaps I can help somewhat. No I am not an organic grower although I did grow apples in plastic bags (works great!). Since I have 22 assorted fruit trees, I do spray.

Peaches...........One application of copper or chlorothalonil sometime March 15-

April 3rd for peach leaf curl prevention.

Spray for curculio late May thru June 15 with an insecticide.

Those are the only major issues I get on peaches although

bacterial spot and brown rot can be issues too. Not for me

luckily.

Apples.................spray 2-3 applications of myclobutanil in May-early june for

prevention of primary apple scab and cedar apple rust.

Captan works great too but will not prevent cedar apple rust.

If you get primary scab then spray with Captan after June 15th

if needed.

coddling moths...First generation hits in June. Damage

shows up early July and these apples abort. 2nd generation

later in the season. Use an insecticide to prevent.

Maggot.....one generation per year but they can appear late

June thru August. Peak flight is usually in August.

How often you want to spray your apples is up to you. I spray

May....fungicide only until petal fall (usually 2 applications).

petal fall...spray fungicide + insecticide.

Repeat every 7-10

days thru mid June due to curculio season and

primary scab. After that I go to a 14 day summer

spray schedule thru August 20th. You can spray

less in Summer if you want to set traps for maggot

(spray only when they are around) and set a biofix

date for coddling moths based on degree days.

Normally in August, I stop spraying any fungicides

after August 1st and just spray insecticide for

maggot prevention.

Tart cherry...............................I do not spray until petal-fall (fungicide/insecticide).

Spray again 10 days later. I make my last spray

around June 15th then I net the trees once I see

the first sign of pink on the fruit. No more spraying

unless I have cherry leaf spot (spray AFTER fruit is

harvested (chlorothalonil).

Pears.........................................Similar to apples on their spray needs for insects.

Captan is not effective for pear scab. Thankfully

I have not had pear scab.

I hope this helps! Just an FYI that Ortho Flower,Fruit and Vegetable insecticide with .5% acetamiprid works wonderful for the home apple grower!

You can buy Captan 50 WP at any Jung Garden Center or at Stein's Garden

centers or online. Myclobutanil can easily be obtained by using Spectracide Immunox fungicide ( Rally or Nova for commercial orchard brands).

You are supposed to spray 3 times--Fall, midwinter and just before bud break. Dormant oil (for bugs) is not supposed to be done at the same time as sprays for diseases (copper or sulphur) You can't spray right before a rain. I find this impossible. My trees didn't even lose their leaves until Thanksgiving, and I had to hand-strip a lot of them. And as you may remember, we then had a MAJOR freeze (for us) and then it started raining and then fog and then rain, etc. I was going to do it after New Year's but got busy. And then SPROING! we had a little warm-up and my early peaches sprouted leaves, and my pluots have buds already. I sprayed last week-end for diseases, but it's too late for peach-leaf-curl on my early peaches. I haven't gotten around to the dormant oil yet. Do what you can, something is better than nothing, and don't beat yourself up (like I do) if you are late, or you don't follow the "schedule". Remember this is a hobby--it's supposed to be fun! (note to self...) And FYI, I use "Micro-Cop" for diseases (it's OK for organic) becuase I have apricots, and you should NEVER use anything with sulphur-lime on apricots, it can kill them. "With more trees is it likely I would need to rotate in another chemical?" Scape, I doubt with any backyard orchard (regardless of size) you'd see resistance buildup. I think if that were a significant risk it would be reflected on the labeling like it is on commercial products (commercial pesticides generally have a section on resistance management). Resistance buildup is a problem in commercial production. Off the top of my head fungicides like Topsin M, Strobe's, SI's, and insecticides like Guthion, Imidan, pyrethroids, etc. have all had issues with pest resistance. Even the herbicide "Roundup" has developed resistance issues. Backyard production is a completely different dynamic than commercial. The sheer numbers of food and pests make pest resistance a concern in commercial, whereas the small number of food and pests in a backyard make resistance a statistical impossibility. Think of it this way. If you were to buy a Powerball ticket every drawing for the rest of your life, you might buy a couple thousand tickets in your life, and you will never win the Powerball. Powerball jackpot odds are one chance in 175 million (about equivalent to the odds of getting pregnant - if you're a man). If, however, you were a multi-millionaire and bought 100 million Powerball tickets, you'd have a decent shot at winning the jackpot. In the same way, there are very slim odds (millions to one) a given pest (say a coddling moth) will hatch with some natural resistance mechanism to a given pesticide. If however, there is a large ongoing population of the pest in a commercial setting, the odds are much greater that farmer will come across an individual of that pest that has natural resistance to the pesticide being used. In that case, the pesticide will put selection pressure on the resistant pest by way of killing all the non-resistant population, leaving only resistant individuals. It's simply a function of numbers. The backyard orchardist will never win the "Powerball" as applied to insect resistance because he/she doesn't have the volume, whereas a farmer with 100's or 1000's of acres of production might develop insect resistance. It's for that reason farmers are strongly advised to use pesticide rotation and other resistance strategies to counter that risk.

Austransplant- You could be right about the PC. Somehow, I have been lucky and do not yet have PC in my orchard. I don't know how this is possible as this is the 4th season with apple trees in my yard, and there are crab apples near by. Is this beginners luck? Nevertheless, I'm preparing myself (by attempting to obtain the Permethrin & Imidan) this year for that eventuality. Since they have never gotten established in my orchard, I wonder if it's simply because I bag my apples and have never let them get a foothold that I haven't seen them yet? (especially around the time just before bagging) I know my local orchards 20 minutes away have to deal with PC. If, like diseases, each variety showed more or less suceptibility to PC, it would be nice to see a chart somewhere (like they do with diseases) so that people could benefit from it. -Glenn

texasredhead: Surround is a kaolin clay product--strained super-fine so it's available for use in spray equipment--even inexpensive sprayers for home and garden. It was "discovered" by a USDA fruit research guy (I think his name was Glen Davis), but if you read the links to the site Althea mentions above, you can find the complete story. I'm always happy when something organic comes from the USDA. For many years, organic growers have been suspicious of the USDA, because of their continuing association with chemical companies. Of course with the advent of the NOP (National Organic Program), where the USDA and organic growers have more of an association and involvement with one another--HOPEFULLY (and I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because the USDA still has a strong association with chemical companies through conventional and IPM growers, and they still are heavily and dedicatedly associated with GMO producers), hopefully, some good will come of this for those who wish to see a more Earth-friendly approach to agriculture. And the link to Michael Phillips, posted above, is an excellent one for organic fruit-tree growers. ANY ORGANIC (FRUIT-TREE) GROWER READING THIS POST IS DOING THEMSELVES A DISSERVICE IF THEY DO NOT READ ABOUT MICHAEL PHILLIPS, HIS FARM, AND HIS ONGOING ORGANIC RESEARCH INTO SENSIBLE FRUIT GROWING. He's a voice in the wilderness for fruit tree growers, who have been told for years by chemical heads, that they have to spray poison on fruit trees to get an edible crop. And his information is intended for home growers and small growers--not mega-orchards, owned by conglomerates.

This is great advice! I will put it into practice. I imagine, however, that this won't come up for a few years yet - is that right? My trees are all bare root/totally new. Would you spray them regardless, to prevent problems down the pike (esp. for fungus)? We have a problem with Japanese beetles for sure. Do any of the insecticides really stop them?

No need to spray young trees that are not fruiting (usually). Peaches would be an exception as peach leaf curl can be nasty. I would skip spraying your young trees unless you have a very severe insect problem (aphid, jap beetle ect). Water, fertilize and let them grow!
