Any words of wisdom on starting comfrey from seed?
Comments (3)re your 'Oregano that ate Chicago'. Watch out for the Comfrey - when happy it will eat the Oregano first and then eat Chicago. Here it grows wild by rivers and in wet ditches. That tells you the conditions it likes. It grows a good 3 feet tall and wide, lush with a huge tap root. Not a Mediterranean-type herb at all. As for the price: for Symphytum officinale, basically a weed, that sounds like a massive rip-off to me. I have the Bocking variety, and although it does not seed it certainly spreads and will grow from any scrap of root. I grow it for compost and liquid fertiliser. If you are considering using it medicinally you need to be aware that it is potentially dangerous and needs expert knowledge....See MoreNeed all of your collective wisdom :-)
Comments (13)Thank you everyone for all the comments and pointers! I looked strenuously yesterday for little noses poking up through the leaves--none to be seen yet. But I have daffodils and irises with buds, so I imagine the hostas will soon follow. I'll definitely try to post pictures once they are up and going. I've always admired hostas, so I was very excited that we had some in our new yard. It'll be fun to see what comes up. Thank you, MJ, for the link to the hosta library. Looks like a lot of good information and searching opportunities. :-) I look forward to spending a little more time there. I am already addicted to plants...hostas will just be a new venue. Sigh...I will have to start beefing up my plant fund. Maybe hubby and I should have a budget committee meeting. lol...See MoreWhen planning a kitchen - words of wisdom
Comments (53)One piece of wisdom I would like to add for those who are building a house, completely gutting a first floor, or adding an addition... Design the entire area together as one piece. Don't wait too long to plan the Kitchen...including the layout. (Door styles, etc. can wait 'til later, layout cannot.) You really should be planning the entire first floor (or addition) at once along with the Kitchen layout so you won't end up w/a Kitchen area that's difficult to make work properly. I've seen so many people who are building, etc. who just draw in a quick area and say, "that'll be the kitchen...details later." Then, when later comes, it's difficult to fit the kitchen they want in the space they've allocated for it. We've seen many posts where people say...our kitchen will be here w/these dimensions...but what I want won't fit, so how do I make it work??? (Or they go into denial and say, "It will be OK with these narrow aisles or dysfunctional layout.") They usually tell us they've either finalized all windows/doors/walls or that they've already installed/built those windows/doors/walls so nothing can be changed...and then want us to come up with some "miracle" layout that will still allow them to have what they want. The placement of those windows/doors/walls is important to all rooms, but especially the Kitchen, so do it all together. People forget that in many respects, the Kitchen is the most important room in the house. So don't treat it like it's the least important by putting it off until later & "making do" with what you're stuck with! Plan it up-front! (If we ever build again, the Kitchen layout will be one of the first things planned...not the last!)...See MoreWhat's your mantra or slogan?? Share your words of wisdom.
Comments (77)I copied and pasted my response from another mantra/motto post. I have since bought a Nike Just Do It tee shirt that I wear on clean up days to keep me on track. This is strange but I have found something that has made me more productive and happier. With Nike staring at me from every closet and garage shelf, their "Just Do It" slogan hit me. I have a bad habit of letting things slide; simple projects/tasks that are staring me in the face, things that make me think of them in the middle of the night, or reach out to me as I pass. This constant nagging brings me down but I still don't tackle them. Examples: For 3 weeks the empty bird feeders kept saying "fill me" every time I looked out the window; clean out the refrigerator vegetable bin; or dust the guest room. I have changed my 'I'll do it later' mentality to a "Just Do It" mantra. For a month I have followed this tactic and it is paying off. I "Just Do It" and I am happier that I have completed the task and my mind is no longer nagging me with a multitude of little but annoying unfinished tasks; kind of like defragging your computer. Granted, there are still major organizing and cleaning projects that need to be done but I am clearing out the little naggers daily. I know we all have to find our own motivator to keep the Procrastination Monster at bay. Thanks for letting me share mine....See Morealexiebalexie
