Thanks Ellie for the reply....I've since located the info on the web that describes homosexual behavior in ducks of the same gender when that's all that is available to them. My two female ducks take turns in who mounts who, even though the pekin in about a third bigger than the blue swedish. The only thing you have to look out for is the much higher cholesterol in duck eggs. I get a kick out of this guy on utube who does a taste test comparing chicken to duck eggs, and says the duck egg tasted "gamey". He must have gone down to the local bog and stole it from some mallard nest. The truth is, domestic duck eggs taste just like the chickens next door, and since they're bigger, you get more bang for your buck (just watch it if your cholesterol is high). I may have wandered off the subject a bit, but if you want to make a pet of a duck, they are more than willing to comply; unlike my chickens who have been raised the same way, but arn't near as friendly.

'female ducks' is redundant. Ducks ARE females, drakes are males! It is just normal behaviour lacking a male, even when a male may be present. Its similar to cattle, horses and other animals when they are in estrus, sometimes the females even mount the males. It may stimulate ovulation.

I've been looking for these for awhile. One party had 3 males and needed to get down to one, so I was able to buy the 2 extra males. Their wings are clipped and I put them outside for the first time in their pen with a fence about 4 feet high. In no time they were out. The lady I bought them from said they wouldn't fly and I didn't need a high fence. Sadly, they aren't very friendly. They are about l year old. Do you think they will become more friendly and tame once they get used to me? They are so beautiful. I am hoping to get a female sometime, or some chicks.

well I don't think mallard mate for life, I had some and the drake had four hens to mate with and when I introduced another drake they didn't mind at all. Geese however I believe do mate for life, so I've heard. Sounds like the hen mallard is trying to nest. Since there is only the two of them, mallard species, they have probably gotten closer than they would have if they were in a larger group. The drake will tend to help fend off predators in some cases. At least mine did. As far as whether or not the geese are sterile, I have no idea. My neighbor had a muscovey duck that thought he was a goose, he was raised with them and would try to mate the female goose. The male goose in turn would attack the duck. Perhaps they are just confused?? I am not a professional by any means, but this is my two cents worth. Hope you figure it out.
