I'm wondering if 1' is an optimal depth for the new boxes. The optimal depth is determined by how deeply the roots go and where the perched water table is in your mix. With a compost/sand mix it's probably several inches high so 1 foot is probably a good depth. With a freer draining mix you could likely reduce the depth to 6" (or less) and get great results.

Thank you! I never thought of the sticky traps and I didn't know that the eggs were actually injected into the leaves. Gross to think that there are pesticides that are 'approved' for use that are non-organic. The more I know, the less I want to eat from the store...but that means I gotta grow it so. Yah. Between my poor, caterpillar, aphid-ridden brassicas and my greens, I suppose finding a place to grow them where I can actually PLACE the Agribon I did purchase is my next task. I started out doing this with the assumption that it was better to keep my plants spread around, but if I am to use the row covers I will need to lump them together a bit more next time. Angie

Okay, I have just changed my mind about the grubs being an early stage of the fly - I just went out and found a huge one (well, comparatively) on the back of one of my spinach leaves. I managed to get a shot of it (check the link below) - and you can see the larger one near the top of the picure. Handily, there's one of the size I'm used to seeing near the middle of the photo for comparison. If anyone can identify these little buggers for me that would be amazing!
