What size pot should I use?
Comments (3)Hi Josette, glad to read you have bought some more DR's, lucky you! Now, am I reading this right....your plant is 3 inches wide and so is the pot??? If that is the case the pots are most certainly too small...how will the caudex grow, it will have no room to swell at all? You will need a pot that gives at least one inch each side of the widest part so 5 inch diameter minimum I would suggest. Maybe someone else would like to add their thoughts...these are only mine :) I have just repotted my 3 bigger ones, also with 3inch diameter bases, they have gone into 7inch diameter pots from 5 inch ones...mainly because I could not find any 6inch shallow ones. They are in the gritty mix so I should not have issues with soil staying wet which can be a prob when plants are overpotted. So 7 inch max I would suggest. I will try and post some pics tomorrow in the light of day! As I said, hope someone else will chime in... Gill UK....See MoreWhat size pot should I use to start my tubers?
Comments (4)Hi, I would cram them in the smallest, shallow pots (plastic is fine) you can fit them in. Make sure t hey have lots of drain holes and BARELY dampen the mix until you see good root growth. That way, the roots will fill the container rapidly, less chance of rot inside, and take up less space. They really need heat and light/sun to get a good start. I have done this for years and had very good luck! Boca Joe...See MoreWhat size pot should I use for a manila mango?
Comments (3)If you just bought it my personal rule of thumb is-never repot for a full year. Laverne plants them slightly overpotted..fine for a greenhouse, but outdoors the slower pace means the root system takes an additional year to knit the soil together. Chances are if you knock it out of it's pot right now-even to just put in a nicer same sized pot,the rootball will fall apart killing the tree. If you hate the look of the nursery pot..just put it in the cover pot of your choice. As far as next year's planting out-wait until its gone through 2-3 flushes before planting in ground. You really want a solid root system....See Morefor MTPS: What pot size preference on veggies, etc?
Comments (7)The varieties to be sown indoors either aren't suitable for WS (I already WS on suitable sorts). I'm wondering the preference of *other people* on container size - not my discretion for a reason. Some people are completely comfortable with "plug" size and handling the younger plants, others don't feel comfortable with anything under 4 inches. That's why my question on what the preference was for MTPS. I've never traded with anyone who attends MTPS before. I know the preferences of others that I trade with, generally down to the personal preferences. I don't as yet have that info for/from those for MTP swapping. What I start up for myself is one thing - what I start for potential trades is another, and starting time dependent upon other people's preferences. That is also why I am attempting to arrange trades pre-MTPS. I don't generally over-sow by much, only enough to have some back-up for what might die off. I am one to sooner keep a back-up supply of seeds when possible. Over-sowing isn't so unlike over-ordering by places that get in live plants - and don't sell them all and then end up tossing plants. Wasteful. If it weren't for the seeming preference for plants instead of seeds, I'd sooner swap seeds (where possible, not all species possible in that form)... but then again, I'm arranging some of that too, to take place before MTPS since seeds are easier to mail and then people can start their own when befitting for their mesoclimate or microclimate, WS if applicable, indoors or outdoors - whatever works best for them. So, I still need to know other people's preferences...or if there is any running "standard"......See Moredaninthedirt (USDA 9a, HZ9, CentTX, Sunset z30, Cfa)
