suggestions for search terms about counter tops

Anyone know if on this wonderful site there's a guide to what counter top colors work well with existing cabinets? I have pickled oak which I'm fine with, but I'd like to do a little kitchen refresh and replace the countertops. I've looked through about 16 pages of the kitchen advice guides, searched pickled oak, and not finding many pictures or suggestions. I want to avoid any "undertones screaming at each other" type thing. Thanks for any help!

I don't think there is, and even if there was, it wouldn't really help you. Everything looks different depending on the size of your kitchen, the windows, the ceiling height, the floor, the light. It's not just about the color of the cabinets.

What you need to do is go to a good stoneyard with a large selection. You may have to make an appointment in advance with the stoneyard, give them a call first. Bring either a sample of your cabinet, or don't be afraid to bring a cabinet door. Most people do if they are trying to match existing cabinets. You might also bring a sample of your floor if you have it. Find 2 or 3 stones you like at the stoneyard. Take photos of the slabs with the cabinet door leaning against them to refer to later. Get samples of those stones from the stoneyard. Take the samples home. You may find they look very different in your home setting. But you will be able to choose once you see the stones you like in your home.

That is the only way to find stone counters that go with your existing cabinets.

You could try something like white stain wood or white stained cabinets or color stained wood cabinets. And sometimes the color of off white painted cabinets is very similar and there are more photos. The first photo came from a search for white stain in Houzz Kitchen photos. The second photo is painted off white. Our upper cabinets are stained off white, but the tone of both pictured cabinets is similar to ours, depending as friedajune pointed out, on the light. FWIW, we have white granite.

I agree that friedajune's advice is correct and goes for quartz showrooms as well, but it is fun to do some photo visualizing.

I recommend PolyWhey for a clear waterbased finish, it's a fabulous finish -- uses milk whey instead of urethane. Has virtually no odor and dries in about an hour. Amazing stuff. Did my staircase with it last year (it dried before the cats even woke from their nap) and it wears like iron. I've switched over to using it entirely for any poly project. There's also BioShield Wood Counter Finish, OSMO, SoyGuard and other oil types that work well and can be recoated easily. You can stain under/with any of these using non-aniline (food-safe) stains. Formica Travertine Silver and Calacatta Marble are nice. The best thing to do is pick the chips you think you might like, then search Houzz's photos for larger shots. There are a lot of amazing marble look-alikes from both Wilsonart and Formica. I will say, however, when I did my laundry room two years ago, I was able to get a stock granite cheaper than a laminate. I was very surprised. A true budget choice is to go to Lumber Liquidators and get a slab of butcher block. [Here's a pic. Alternately, a length of stock laminate off the shelf from a big box store will be even cheaper, and once in a while you will find a really nice piece.

Still has a retro vibe because the style of cabinet shows...late 50's . I'd get the boomerang or retro laminate type....maybe solid color-avoid gray or black- just not upbeat enough. Look for retro hardware they are reproducing now.-chrome-have you purchased the satin nickel pieces? Lighting can be ceiling or close to ceiling fixture-catalogue search at your leisure-maybe a track fixture if one suits the space. My goal would be a lighthearted fun attitude w the counter /hardware.

Google image search is going to be your best friend. Search for images of kitchens with pickled oak cabinets, and save the ones you love, then look for similar materials and see how the samples look in your space.
