I had an undermount on the kitchen we just removed. It had a pretty wide front area of countertop, oh, maybe 4". With the new kitchen, I have the Kohler whitehaven. I haven't used it yet, but it's in place. We're still waiting on counters. Anyway, one of the main reasons I wanted it was because I knew it would be better for my back, and I can tell it's going to be.

I have full overlay cabinets and I had the option of letting the sink front be pushed back touching all the way on the frame or applying a flat cabinet panel or trim and allowing the sink to sit back against that priece, allowing it to extend into the room the full amount - so the area behind the side lip is flush with the front of the cabinets. It's so hard to explain. With the sink projecting it's full amount into the room, it's really easy on your back because it's like you can bend your knee just a bit and be like leaned under the sink. Gosh I know that doesn't make sense. There is basically hardly any space between me and the dishes now, or will be I should say.

Okay, so pardon my inability to express myself before. This will help. On the first picture, you can see that with my full overlay cabinets, you can see that you can choose to push the sink back against the frame and the sink won't project as far. You can also see the trim piece cut and sitting in there to show how if you had that trim cut to size or had ordered an extra drawer front, then the sink can sit flush up next to that, therefore sitting on the same plane at the cabinet fronts. This is really only an option I guess if you have full overlay to have that choice.

Back to your other point, yes, it slopes, but it's not a giant amount, I prefer it that way though because it's almost ergonomic or something because it makes this eased plane for your hands and wrists to rest on. I really love this sink.

You need to go to a showroom and get the feel for the whitehaven. I didn't intend on getting a farm sink at first until I just happened upon it at the showroom and I could tell it was going to be so much better for me.

I love my Whitehaven. I am short and when I went to the Parade Homes I felt like I had to reach over the counter more than I liked to get to the regular undermount sinks. The Whitehaven is much closer. What I had to get used to was the depth. My older overmount sink was not as deep. I have noticed that most of the undermount sinks are deep compared to an overmount. I am used to it now.

Joseph, LOL - that is a good point. I do have an average dishwasher, and I can put plates and bowls directly in it after scraping, but the pots, pans, and bakeware need some scrubbing of baked-on food after soaking and before putting them in the dishwasher. I dunno - I thought my dishwasher is OK but maybe I should upgrade it too. There are eight in my household and cook all meals, so I do spend a lot of time leaning over a sink!

jhmarie, thanks for reinforcing what I always suspected about undermount vs. farmhouse sinks for short people. I am 5'1" and really want a kitchen I can be comfortable in.
