Seeds of Picea Martinezii: where to buy? And other questions..
Comments (17)Well..you are right about the summer maximum but to call this a monsoon....BEtween 2000-3000 m etres, where P. martinezii grows they get 680mm on average. So the circulation may well be that of a monsoon but the result is unlike what the word monsoon in general seems to imply. I also found out that the average temperature is a staggering 14 C (annual average). That is really high for a spruce. The climate is classified as oceanic. Okey, more like Southern France oceanic or NW Portugal Spain Oceanic. But than with less rain. Summer precipitation is probably 200-300 mm but the growing season is much longer. Probably all year round or at least march-november. This means that growing season precipitation is lower than that of most parts of NW Europe (much lower). It may succeed in the eastern US, but not where temperatures can drop to -20 or lower I think. I guess this spruce is may be a zone 9 one. But unsure....See MorePicea Chihuahuana South / Southwest
Comments (20)If that is Picea martinezii then you are very lucky. They are very rare and I have never seen one offered in any nursery I've been to. Picea chihuahauna is usually fairly easy to find on the other hand. Picea martinezii should be very similar in its growth requirements to P. chihuahanua so you should have no problem growing it there. In fact I was just reading about the areas of Mexico that these two species grow and it might be even better adapted to your climate. Those sharp needles might come in handy, a hedge of those would be very interesting. Here is a link that might be useful: Spruces for South...See MorePicea chihuahuana.. problem?
Comments (3)I've seen a similar problem (some buds, primarily main shoot lead buds, apparently alive, but not breaking) in Abies (A. pindrow, to be exact) following a severe cold winter that didn't quite kill it. That could be the cause here too, but not definitely so. Resin...See MorePicea chihuahuana........
Comments (11)There is an interesting specimen growing at Tifton, GA that is a perfect, dense little pyramid. It is 15 years old and has really tolerated the intense heat/humidity and red clay there well. I think I have some photos of it somewhere. I wish I could find seed of this species. I do have P. martinezii, which is doing surpisingly well here....See MoreUser
