Smooth top or coil electric range in a rental?

I am replacing the cooktop with a range in our rental/ guest apartment. This is a weekend or weekly rental in a vacation area, not long term.

The range will be a 24" and I'm budgeting a max of $1000. I have a few options in electric ranges between coil or smooth top. I like the look of the smooth top better but having never lived with one I'm wondering if it is more subject to scratching? Also, safety wise, are people more likely to get burned by the smooth top?
