Countertop Support for a Coffee Bar?

Not exactly kitchen related but the best place I know for advice:)

I'm helping to build two coffee bars at my church using IKEA Kitchen Cabinets with their butcherblock countertop. The location is on a front wall of the church building that has a 78" floor to ceiling window. The windows are near the walkway to the main entrance so anything placed in front of them will be visible from outside.Aside from needing surface area, storage is needed for the coffee carafes, condiments, cups, etc. I hate to see the windows covered so I thought of doing this....but will we need extra support for the countertop? And if so, how do we do it since we can't use brackets to attach to the window?

Weld tabs onto (2) 2" square tube steel, paint it flat black, and screw it to the cabinets.

Ditto Lily'smom. Can you post a picture of the actual space? Using the tube steel Joseph referenced, but painted white, if you have to stay with the single coffee bar, could it be a clear surface (safety glass, some kind of plastic)?

If the tops were 3cm and the overhang was 14", no additional support would be required, according to most estone manufacturers installation instructions.

I would strongly recommend AGAINST buying ANY CounterBalance product... they will completely hose the homeowner / DYI consumer. Just compare the price for the brackets between http://counterbalanceshop.com and http://www.chemical-concepts.com/counterbalance.php The same product will cost you $114 at the first site and $81 at the second. Really??? THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME VENDOR. I tried to place an order based upon the info on the Chemical site (didn't even know about the counterbalance site) and they wouldn't honor the price posted. Don't do business with this vendor who isn't interested in doing business with you. Vendor's words: "I could care less about" selling to consumers. STAY AWAY !!! Find a local machine shop who is interested in doing business at a fair price/profit. The product is a VERY simple job for any machine shop to produce. Chemical concepts doesn't even make the product -- they sell glue. For the person who wanted to know where they could get metal support bars, here is an option: http://metalworking.mscdirect.com/CGI/MWSRCH?N=32003649 I don't have any experience with them, so I don't know if their prices/policies are good or bad. I just found them from doing a bit of searching.

Maybe your real estate person is trying to tell you to de clutter. And the only way he can get that across is to tell you to hide stuff behind a raised bar. He’s wrong about the raised bar. It won’t hide anything. Declutter. Then do it again. Then clean and clean again. The first thing anyone thinks when they see a scent pot is what pet smell are they trying to hide. Nothing wrong with the counters either. They suit the home. Putting shiny new stone on top of 30 year old cabinets does not increase resale value.

The cabinet company will be making a base out of 2x4s and secure them to the floor via tapcons all over the place. Then, the cabinets will be placed on top of that base, and screwed to the bases. Then the Skin will be applied and secured to the base and to the cabinets along with toe kicks. on the back of the cabinets and on the base a 3/4 piece of MDF will join the cabinets to the bases. There will be three corbels on the island with the steel supports as well. The countertop will have a radial edge and start around 3 or 4" overhang on the sides and then go up to around 12, (most likely around 10") in the middle. I am worried about it tipping over but they swear that it won't go anywhere.

Thanks for popping in Joseph...I searched and found more details you've posted before about those square tubes. Awesome!

Lily'smom/oldbat - those side walls aren't actual measurements. I don't have those because that idea didn't occur to me, partly because there is an interior window on one of the walls. I would need to swing by the church to draw an accurate floorplan but I can try to explain with this old picture I found.

The glass on the far left of this picture is the main entrance. The building is symmetrical so the window pictured above is also found on the other side but with the wall on the left and no interior window.

The foyer area is small and there are about 100 people milling about getting coffee so there are folding tables set-up (no food) on either side in front of these windows. What I've been asked to do is come up with an affordable permanent solution for both sides.

oldbat2be - I can't picture what you mean by a clear surface. I'm intrigued. Quick link or pic by what you mean?
