I think that 1.20 or less price for a pkg of Burpee seeds is a good value at my Menard's. (40% off 1.95 pkgs). I get Burpees quality of about 1/2 the varieties I am planning to plant and don't have to buy the large pkgs of seed through the mail. The rest I am planning to buy from Pine Tree Seeds. I spend less for the same number of varieties of seed this way than I would using $25.00 off $50.00 purchase from catalogs.

I posted a question about the quality a few weeks ago, and many people chimed in to say that they use them with good results. I think it would have been in February, if you want to look back. I bought some and WS'd kholrabi, broccoli and cauliflower out of the 20 cent wal mart packs, and have crazy good germination, with some of the healthiest looking, sturdy sprouts that I have ever seen.

I just went back to the Crosman's site and wanted to let everyone know that they also have, at higher than seed prices : Grass Seed, Fertilizer, Legumes, Control Products, Grass/Fertilizer Spreader, Lawn Care Program I also looked at the prices again of flower and vegie seeds and didn't find any over 99 cents and they were mostly beans, and corn at 99 cents. These are the best prices I've found. I've had very good luck with their seeds.

Amanda, The "10 packs for a dollar" seeds are packaged and sold by the parent company Plantation Products under the name "American Seed Company" although they are NOT "the" American Seed Company that has long existed and done business under that name. (The website of the "real" American Seed Company has long had a disclaimer stating that the "American Seed Company" seeds sold cheaply in the spring are NOT their seeds, so they apparently have issues with the seeds.) The seed packets don't have a very large number of seeds per packet, but then one wouldn't really expect them to for the price at which they are sold. The seeds they offer are common, old varieties that generally are open-pollinated and are not patented, protected varieties which is one of the reasons they can be sold so cheaply--no royalties have to be paid. On the web site, you can click on "Promotional Packets" to learn more about them. If you own a local mom-and-pop feed store and want to buy/re-sell American Seed Company products at your store, you can purchase these "promotional" packets for less than 10 cents per packet, so even at ten packs for a dollar, stores are making a small profit on them. And, or course, chain stores like dollar stores and regional chains of farm supply stores, or even discount stores like Family Doller, buy them in huge quantities and sell them at varying prices. At some of our local dollar-type stores, you can find them for varying prices--usally anything from 4 or 5 packs for $1 to 10 packs for $1. Some of our local stores have other seeds from Plantation Products, usually their standard or value seed packets, also sold under the American Seed Company name, for 59 to 99 cents per pack up to $2-$3 per pack depending on how large the packets are and how many seeds they have in them. I see these every year at our local Tractor Supply Store. Sometimes our Wal-Mart has them, too, and then they usually are on little small display racks that hang near the regular shelves of garden products. I've linked the website for Plantation Products below. If you look at it, you can see that the seed packets look like and then you'll know what to watch for. American Seed Co. products are fine if you are looking for general seeds...like, if you want to plant zinnias, for example, but are not looking for a specific named zinnia.
