PMS after menopause.

My last period was approx 15 months ago and I'm about to turn 52yrs old. Since I have been more than 12 months without a period I consider myself to be post menopause.

However I still seem to be on some sort of monthly cycle. About a week before my period would normally start I begin to have my usual pms symptoms. I get bloated, have tender breast, appetite increases, become irritable and can't sleep. Then when my period would normally start I get all those symptoms too. I get cramps, headaches, sleep a lot and yet still feel tired, feel depressed and weepy. After about 5-7 days those symptoms start to abate until the whole cycle repeats the next month.

I also have the usual menopause symptoms throughout the month as well, like hot flashes and sleeplessness. So I guess my question is does anyone here still feel like they are on a monthly cycle even though they are well into menopause? I did a Google search of this and did come across a couple of women asking this same thing. These were "ask a doctor" type sites and in every case the doctors responded to the women that it's not possible but I know it's happening to me.

I'm 53. Sudden onset of menopause is the only way to describe it. One day, I could write a calendar for a year, based on my cycle. I was regular- stupid regular- until BAM. No more!

Yes. I still have some natural hormones circulating- and I can tell it from PMS feelings. Mostly- I have some (thank god, confirmed benign) lumps on one of my breasts. They used to get big, a bit painful, right before menstruation. They still get tender, I still feel a bit "PMS"- and my husband still sees it. :) It has been 14 months since my last period. But it still happens.

Maureen57 I know exactly how you feel. I joined this forum 4 years ago and it saved my sanity. I haven't had a period for 3 years and before it stopped I had had at least 7 years of awful menopause symptoms. I thought I was beginning to get back to normal but in the past month I've been having nausea, dizziness, irritability, mood swings and sweats again! When I see how many others this is happening to I feel like just giving up. As I type this now I am in tears. I have never taken anything the doctor prescribed and only gone down the natural route. I have spent thousands of pounds on vitamins(which I regularly take)and hormone creams. I watch what I eat.What else can I/we do? I said to my husband just the other day that I preferred having periods to this! I'm 53 and don't want the rest of my life to be like this. Its a truly depressing thought. Once again, this forum will be my saving grace as I know I'm not the only one.

I had a sleep study last May, which showed I had various sleep problems (apnea, alpha wave intrusion, no REM sleep). It makes me wonder if lots of women going through menopause begin to have these kinds of problems. I guess I'm finally going to think about trying a cpap machine, but I think it will be a challenge. In retrospect, I really think its been my sleep problems that have made the past 10 years pretty much a constant struggle. I think sleep deprivation can cause all sorts of craziness. Even if you think you've had a good night's sleep, it doesn't mean you have.

Boy can I tell you a sad story about dryness, with a happy ending, it's sort of embarrassing, but here goes. I was so dry my eurethria (sp) had been pulled up inside of my vagina. When I urinated it drained through my vagina. Some of it stayed inside until I stood up then it drained. I had to go to the bathroom as soon as I felt an urge or I couldn't wait. I can't count the times I have come home and run to the bathroom as soon as I got the door open, often not making it. I was wearing panty liners all the time. I thought it was the typical problem women have and have to have their bladder tacked up. Thank goodnes it wasn't. I no longer wear the pads, no problems at all. The doc prescribed estrace ointment as a topical ointment for 2 weeks out of the month. What a relief, I could have cried I was so happy to know I wasn't facing surgery, a surgery that often doesn't do any good. There are no "harmless" herbal treatments, if it solves the problem they are as dangerous as the drugs the doc prescribes. My sister is a nutritionist and she takes handfuls of pills, I tried what she recommend for my ailments nothing worked. Also her health is worse than mine.
