Yep, this is my 2nd home with a dungeon. But, someone did pour some concrete on the floor of this one prior to us purchasing it. The dirt would have been better, as they didn't even level the concrete and it is very uneven and appears to have no vapor barrier under it. We had a very similar unplanned egress, for the same reason. We were able to custom order a new, vinyl window and with some "adjusting" of the opening and frame, able to mortar in a whole new window. It is the only window in the entire dungeon, so we wanted to maintain a window. Otherwise, we would have just filled it in.

At least it is winter so it is just mice. I can think of worse intruders like snakes or raccoons.

No dungeons here. We're basically at sea level. My dad owns some property with an old building that was a post office back in the 1880's. You could go under the the building and it always freaked me out because I have no idea what could be living in there. There was a cement cellar right next to it. I think that was newer. It had some shelves at the back for canned goods. I was scared of it too. It doubled as tornado shelter.

My house isn't as old, 1926, but I have multi-paned, really old glass, in mine too. I actually taped one pane back together after a hail storm. I had forgotten about it, until you said that. I better go fix it before I forget again. Mine are painted black by the former owner.

Guess it is time to get a new window. We have had more mice going after the bait in the crawl space than we have had in 20 years. I think they have come in to escape all the rain and flooding.

We have raccoons in winter, and I'm lucky I don't have a family of them in the basement--as far as I know! No way to tell how long the pane has been missing, as I don't go down there very often. My chest freezer is in the basement, but it's not near that window. We had a violent t-storm recently that might have done it.

Yes, Rocky is a handsome boy. He has 6-toed feet too, and a super-soft, dense coat. With Siamese in his lineage, he has many things to say. I interpret most of them as "I love you." :-)

LOL My basement is creepy but it does have a cement floor that was beautifully painted when I looked at the house. I was so impressed. After buying the house I came to realize that they had just covered up the previous peeled paint because the basement got water in it every time it rained. :( So it didn't take long for that beautiful paint to be ruined with the shop vac every time it rained. A sump pump finally fixed that problem. But at least no critters come in. I did get 2 possums in the crawl space under the addition on the back of the house. It doesn't connect to the basement. I had a "critter gitter" come and remove them and then put solid steel screen across the ventilation openings.

I did have an actual window fall out of the addition and I finally broke down and got new windows since I was in serious denial about how bad the windows were. I noticed a significant and immediate lower of my utility bills.

Well, I feel like I have gotten off topic, LOL. No dungeon. I love the picture of Rocky looking in!! He is a real beauty!

I have that basement too having an 1840 house. We have a concrete floor but stone walls. I have a greenhouse in the old coal bin and litter boxes so I go down there but as little as possible. It would make a good torture chamber.

I have never lived in a house with a basement. Our house in Denver had a floor below ground but it was bedrooms and a bathroom and stuff. I don't like basements terrible things happen in them in the movies lol.

I once had a friend who lived in an underground house. It was odd. Her husband, an architect, designed it. I never asked what they did about moisture, etc.

Raven, the next time I have to venture down to the basement, I'll be thinking about the terrible things that happen in the movies. LOL

The homes in my area (CA) don't tend to have dungeons. Love the photo; beautiful cat.

The first house I grew up in MA went back to the 1800's and had a scary "dungeon" cellar with dirt floor and rock walls. It even had a separate room called a root cellar. I hated hide & seek in winter because someone always hid in the cellar and I hated to go down there. That is when I developed my fear of cellars.

The modern basement in the 1960's IL house didn't scare me as much but never really felt comfortable in basements. I never would consider a basement apartment when I moved out and on my own.

Our first house in San Jose, CA, built around 1910-20, had a partial concrete basement that opened up into a rather tall dirt crawl space. We made it our laundry room and wine/beer storage area. I never dallied down there when doing laundry.

Mice! Recently I had evidence of a mouse. I tried two different catch and release but nothing was captured.

We put down those horrible sticky traps. My DH was very upset because he thought we could have more. I am so happy that nothing was caught!

Maybe the little guy died on his own or moved on?

I've told this before, about the world's most industrious mouse.

We decided to make a shower bath out of the powder room that backed to our kitchen. When the contractor broke through the wall from the powder room to start the work I heard him laughing and went to see.

I'd been scolding our young DS and his pals for giving our Westie too many Milk Bones. It seemed I was always buying a new box. We kept the treats in the cabinet under the kitchen sink.

The cavity between the kitchen and the powder room was stacked with hundreds of Milk Bone dog biscuits. A mouse had been able to squeeze through the hole for the kitchen sink plumbing to raid the dog's treats -- LOTS of treats!

We never did see the little worker. He'd probably died of exhaustion.

chisue, we had something similar happen, but it was dog kibble in one of the walls of the garage. There was probably enough to fill a 50 pound bag in there!

When we had dogs, we kept a couple of days worth of kibble under the sink so we wouldn't have to run downstairs to get dog food every time we fed them. That summer we had a mouse who was eventually caught and removed from the house. That winter, hubby went to put on his heavy winter robe for the first time of the season and put his hands in the pockets only to quickly take them right back out again. Both pockets of his robe were filled with dog food. I guess the mouse was going to take up residence in hubby's robe!

Our current house doesn't have a basement; actually basements in California are rare because of the high water table in most areas. Not sure why, but we rarely see mice. When we had dogs, they used to catch them. Now we have a family of coyotes nearby as well as several owls and I think they take care of the mice.
