Radon vapor barrier

The house is slab on grade and single story. It is about to be remodeled with the existing carpeting removed. This is an opportunity to do something to the concrete floor before considering a radon mitigation system.

Is it safe to install a vapor barrier (not just moisture barrier) above the slab? If so, how thick should the barrier be. And is one brand recommended over another.

Concrete sealants appear to be toxic or not good enough to keep the vapor from entering the house. It could cost $800 plus product cost to have the remodelers seal the concrete. I think the $ better spent on a mitigation system.

The radon level at the sale closing was below the action level, but higher than I'd like to see.

Thanks,
