Tea Roses and Other Things
Comments (22)As usual I feel like hugging you all for your wonderful comments and appreciation. I'm glad also that you liked the porcelain and the painting and my beloved duck. The painting is a German scene by an artist named Junker and was painted in 1947. The picture of the girl is a print of a Van Gogh. My husband painted a large portrait based on this picture as a present to me. Daisy, our tastes must be similar. Chinese porcelain from the early to mid 1700's is really my favorite of all, and that bowl is very special to me. I'm glad the pictures hide the mildew and other imperfections, and am grateful for your positive comments about the roses, which, like all living things, are not perfect. The tea roses, by the way, are spaced about 6-7 feet apart, and 8-9 feet would probably have been better, but I think we know how it goes when we plant those tiny bands in what looks like a vast expanse of nothing. It's so difficult to believe that they'll ever grow this large and I'm already having to prune some of them to keep them in line. It doesn't seem to hurt them once they're mature and I've noticed that they quickly put on new growth after a haircut. mlle melanie, the garden is far from being perfectly maintained, and I manage it by doing a little here and there as often as I can. Not working full-time really helps (and I don't cook much either!). I actually have only 72 roses and quite a few of them are small and young. Many people have lots more and I always wonder how they manage. Ingrid...See MoreOne more time: your best no spray roses (no singles or OGRs)
Comments (15)My top 5 (plus a runner up): Quietness Marie Pavie Aunt Honey Julia Child Belinda's Dream Heirloom Marie Daly, although an 'Earthkind' Rose does get BS enough to defoliate about the bottom 1/3+ by the end of August, Why it is 'Earthkind' and Marie Pavie is not, needs some explaining to me. Marie Pavie is the better rose of the two, IMHO. More restrained growth, more flowers and slower to rush through a blooming cycle, and some very little BS on only the bottom 1/5 and then only at September's end. I do not believe there is an entirely BS proof rose. Even the Knockouts can show some BS, but usually only under extremely stressed growing conditions. Even if a rose who was well researched, was found to have glowing disease issue reports, and it proved to be BS free in your garden for 10 continuous years, it can have a bad 11th. year for BS and throw the owner into a tailspin. Generally such incidents are glitches with things returning back to normal in subsequent years. What usually causes such an episode are extremely favorable conditions converging at that time so favorable for BS that no rose could show full resistance. Such events are encountered very rarely, fortunately....See MoreFor Aunt Val With Love
Comments (6)My Dearest Carrie, My heart pours out for you. Such beautiful, beautiful flowers for a beautiful person and special Aunt Val. She sounds like she was/is your "hero" person in your life. Your comments say much for her...and for you. What a tribute! To have such exquisite flowers grown by her loving niece surely pleases her, even now. Thank YOU for being such a lovely person. The world is in need of good souls. What I learned from my sweet son who died at an early age is to live every moment, every day to the fullest and find happiness in all that you can. He did this with an ever present smile in the face of many hardships and tragedies. He was the most forgiving person I have ever known and always found some much joy and gaiety in everything. He was and always will be my hero....my angel. We never know when our time in this world will end, so live each moment you can to the fullest and be happy for each one. That is what I learned from my son. It sounds like Aunt Val did too. My Deepest and most Sincere Sympathies to you and your family. ~Annie...See MoreARS 2012 Official Rose List Supplement, September 2012
