how do you trellis yard long beans?
Comments (4)I wonder what you mean about training them to go up the side of trees. Do you mean live trees or do you mean saplings cut down and used to make tripods? I would not advise training beans on lrees. They will not grow well in shade or among roots of a tree. I make a free-standing trellis about seven feet tall, which is about as high as I can reach for harvesting. The bean stalks will grow taller that that and just flop over the top and hang down, which is fine. See the link below for trellis ideas. Comments (22)I scrapped a queen size box spring out of the trash, cut all the fabric off, then gave it a couple 2x4 legs. I plant the cucs in front of it then train them up it when they are about 3 weeks and then they do the rest by themselves. It works great. Just face it south and make sure it is sturdy. They grow up the springs great. Then it sits on the side of my garage all winter. Here is a link that might be useful: Pic of the box spring...See MoreNon-rusting concrete mesh for trellis?
Comments (6)I love my mesh panels that we use for sugar snap peas and other vining vegetables. It's the perfect height although one year my sugar snaps got over 6' tall. I plant about a 4" wide row so some of the outer plants don't get a good grab on the mesh. We add some twine to keep the plants from falling away from the mesh. The tomato cages made from a more flexible mesh are probably 30 years old. I don't notice the rust. The panels are held in place with steel posts and zip ties. They stay out all winter and we enjoy watching the birds sit on the fencing waiting for tasty insects to come by....See MoreHow to build the trellis when box sits on concrete patio
Comments (6)You could build it as Mel suggests, out of conduit, but instead of using the rebar to stake it into the ground, you could use those U-clamps they sell at the hardware store..just use several of them per "leg" and screw them directly to the bed frame. I haven't tried it, but in theory it should work--maybe not for melons or super heavy crops, but certainly for beans and moderately pruned tomatoes I would think....See Morelizdh87
