Architect/Kitchen Design Question
Comments (21)Here's what I did and it worked very well for us. After the architect drew up our floorplan, I was not satisfied with the kitchen (it was tiny and closed off from living spaces). I communicated my thoughts to the architect and asked that he rework the laundry, dining, kitchen area of the plan for me. Still not satisfied with that area after three rounds of revisions, I took the entire floorplan to a kitchen designer. She drew up several ideas for the laundry, dining, kitchen space that were a bit more specific than a mere floorplan. I worked with the KD to come up with the perfect plan for us for that part of the space. Then, I took the KD's work back to the architect who incorporated this redesigned space into his drawings and finalized the plans for the builder to use. I am very pleased with how this space turned out. It's very different than the original plan that the architect drew up. The $500 I spent with the KD to do the redesign absolutely is the best $500 I spent in the entire build. Now, the KD I used is not one of those KDs that works for a specific cabinet line and is focused only on what cabinets you pick for a particular layout. This was a KD independent of any cabinet manufacturer and was very talented in making me think about how I wanted to use the space and then designing it for our use. I used an onsite custom cabinetmaker for all of our cabinets and our trim. None of our cabinetry or trim detail was ever reduced to CAD or other detailed drawings before he began building. That made me very nervous. I simply made him a book of pictures I had cut out of magazines (or printed off of this site) and he mimicked those pictures beautifully. Good luck in your design and in your build! It's a long process, but worth it in the end. Our build was fraught with drama, but I've forgotten most of the negative stuff by now, and I've only been in the house four months!...See MoreRecommendation for custom cabinet makers near Allentown, PA
Comments (5)You are comparing cheap imports and builder grade with some mid grade and then want to compare with true custom? You need to narrow down your focus first. Learn the difference between a true custom maker and someone who orders parts and assembles them. That isn't custom. No true custom maker would allow anyone else to finish his product either. That is 50% of the price of cabinets , first of all, and secondly, the finish is actually more important than the construction....See MoreKitchen Designer in Chicago area
Comments (22)I just bought my house. I have spent the last year looking at houses in my area. I still watch the market to see what is selling at what price. I am very well aware of what level of upgrades are in the houses and what is selling and for what price. We are not cheaping out on this, and have raised our budget from the beginning because we decided to get new appliances. We are buying mid range SS appliances (mostly Bosch, including their new Benchmark induction range) and likely mid range semi custom cabinets (which is what is in it now), although I am looking at some local custom cabinet makers too, and either granite or Quartz counters, all of which is totally fitting with what is in the remodeled houses in our area. The wall we are looking at removing is actually not an expensive part of this because it is small and non load bearing. The ideas I need are not a whole kitchen design, it is a couple of specific questions, and honestly if I just leave the wall up I can accomplish 90% of what I wanted with the plan I currently have laid out, which has minimal footprint change but does give me a wider U. I just thought that it would be nice to talk to an actual kitchen designer and make sure there wasn't some other arrangement that makes more sense, but I am ok with what I have if that is where we end up. My whole reason originally for wanting to reuse the cabinets is because they are good quality and in very good condition so I hate to put out a bunch of money for new ones. I have different reasons for doing the remodel than the cabinets. I am possibly going new now because of a variety of the choices we have made (going to the ceiling, etc) have us not re-using the majority, so at this point it is just probably easier to go all new. I really do appreciate your advice. Your comments on a different post were what made me start looking to talk to an independent kitchen designer. But, respectfully, you can't just take one or two posts and assume you know everything about the house/remodel/goals and say if you aren't willing to do this or that you shouldn't even do the project....See MoreTop quality plumbing fixtures with independent temp and volume
Comments (11)Thanks David, I did consider separates (and am still). I know Axor has one sold as a separate but it's just under $2k. They don't make the separates easy to lookup either. It's a good suggestion though. It looks like it comes down to the extra cost of a volume trim and rough as the temperature valve is about the same cost of the all-in-one pieces. It also gets rid of the crowding problem I see in the all-in-one's. They have one big lever and the others are tiny. The Delta/Brizo temp settings look a little in the way of the volume setting. I assume the temp valves can deal with having the volume downstream well enough. So on the temp valve, do you just get the pressure balanced model or thermostatic ?...See MoreJan Russak
