off topic - major pet food recall
Comments (59)I'm feeding my cat Purina and so far none of their catfood is on the list as far as I know. But they just added Purina's Alpo (dogfood) and they already had another kind of their dogfood on there. I also heard that the first kind of dry food has appeared on the list...can't remember what, but it wasn't a Purina product. I'm getting paranoid about this and am considering switching to the kitty foods at the health food stores or something. My congressman is going to get a letter about this mess! And I think everyone who loves their pets should do that also. I love my kitties and every time I buy catfood I think...could this kill them? Could it make them sick? It should never have happened! Sooo entirely preventable! If I had known that the petfood companies allowed stuff from China in their products, I'd have realized how dangerous that would be and I'm not a genius. Now, why didn't THEY know? Or DID THEY KNOW?...See MoreBlue Buffalo dog food
Comments (8)I did some reading on the BlueBuff website. Seems their formula includes special Life Source bits---cold formed nutrients and antioxidents selected by holistic vets and animal nutritionists. These components are supposed to strengthen a dogs immune system, support his specific life stage requirements, and protect him from the negative impact of environmental toxins. In other words, the usual mumbo jumbo of fish oil sales men masquarading as animal nutritionists. While I applaud their intent, the reality is that they are first selling a product in a field with a LOT of competitors. They list meat as the first ingredient---that is good. They define by products as 'clean, non rendered animal parts derived from slaughtered animals(Could those be the animals slaughtered for the MEAT??), consisting, but not limited to lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, blood, and more. What is bad about those parts? I see where liver and kidney treats are recommended as great training aids. I started a thread from a website dedicated to large breed dogs---which states some grains are good sources of protein for dogs--to include yeast. GEE. Imagine that! Oh, yeah---the BlueBuff website includes a test site---to compare major brand dog/cat foods against their brand----NONE---not one of the LISTED brands comes close to BlueBuff. Great case of selective advertising. Ok, so I tried something new----and may again---just not that one. Been raising dogs on Pedigree for many years---had one chihuahua mix live to 20---a chow/lab mix to 15----on that stuff. Just normal trips to the vet---shots, occasional hot spot/ear problems. That proves to me it is ok. In fact, we just adopted a whippet mix from an adopt or kill facility---she HAS to have Pedigree dry---everything else I have tried---to include Pedigree canned---causes horrific runs. She needed at least ten pounds(she is now 40 pounds) put on when we got her---took about three weeks. The same daily amount required to put on weight is now her maintenance amount. Gotta be good for her by my book....See MoreFyi- Whole Dog Journals 2008 Food List
Comments (1)Thank you for posting that. Interesting reading and great list. We have been feeding our pup Eagle Pack Holistic for about 8 months now and we're big fans. Nice to see it made the list. :)...See MoreFYI: Blue Buffalo recall
Comments (8)I don't know what I'm going to switch to yet. The more I read, the more recalls I see (in 2010). It looks like the FDA has been notifying lots of companies about salmonella, and the companies then "voluntarily" recall certain lots. So far, Natural Balance, Merrick, Iams, Eukanuba, and Pro-Pet vitamins have all had recalls of certain products this year. I guess the big companies are all pretty much the same product with a different label. So far I haven't seen anything bad about Solid Gold. I bought some Taste of the Wilderness last night (salmon flavor) and my dog won't touch it. I googled it and saw that they had a silent recall over a previous run recently because dogs wouldn't eat it. They claimed it was fine, just too dry. BTW, it almost smells rancid although the sell by date is Sept 2011. I also found out that it is made by the notorious Diamond dog food company, although it is mentioned nowhere on the bag. I'm going to try to start making some homemade food again - maybe I can find a recipe we can both eat, LOL!...See More- 7 years ago
