It sounds like it's more a manufacturing/packaging issue? I love my dogs, but I don't feed them super expensive dog food. I get my grain free from Costco

That website is a poor source of information about different dog foods. The people doing the "reviews", and suggesting they are informed and unbiased in doing the comments and "ratings", have neither the professional training nor professional credentials to be making the assessments they make.

It's a good example of what can go wrong in trying to find useful information on the internet. These people are unqualified. Give them the credibility they deserve - None.

I absolutely hate dog food advisor! It would take me all day to explain...HA! Let's just say; listen to your vet and not a bunch of people giving their opinions on the web. I will tell you from experience that every dog is different as far as what they can or cannot eat. If one dog itches from eating chicken, has no effect on the next dog which could be sensitive to peas and on and on. My dog, come to find out, is allergic to rice...an ingredient in many many dog foods and we could not find one single grain free food that she could tolerate. Finally she got on IAMS in the green bag and is doing fantastic. I'm sure this food would be given a terrible rating on dog food advisor because it has corn. Well my dog can eat the corn and does great on it.

Blue Buffalo is far from being "the best" dog food! Dog food advisor is an OK source for recalls.

I find that many vets know little about dog nutrition and dog food.

Elmer, you've been critical of this site before and to be blunt about it, you are just plain wrong. The site isn't popular with most dog owners because it has misinformation in it. And one doesn't have to be a "professional" to understand something especially when they've spent years studying it. It has a wealth of information in it that many many dog owners have benefited from.

When you look at it from a "non professional" perspective, it's typically the "professionals" who make descisions and screw things up, so I'd take a pissed off Scientist's (who's dog died because of jaded food) research over a professionals any time. At least I know why the information is being published and that there is no hidden agenda with what I'm reading.

Graywings is spot on, Vets only know about the expensive "prescription foods" that are filled with crappy ingredients. Manufactures and Vets push them because they make big profits off of them but not one ingredient in those foods requires a medical prescription and many dogs have suffered from eatting them, my own included.

This is not a first for Blue Buffalo. This food company that has experienced many recalls on a wide variety of their products. I'd feed my dog the Costco food (which has also experienced a recall) before I'd feed her Blue Buffalo.

I think Blue Buffalo used to be much better...but they got bought out and you know how that goes.

I rotate protein sources, and I add a bit of canned food to the mix. Blue Buffalo is still in my rotation but I'm about done with them too.

You could be making your own dog food and have a problem as well. What if you had used the cheese that is currently on recall for humans? Fromm's had recalls. Evangers has recalls.

I finally cured my cats throwing up. He is allergic to corn, wheat, or soy. I went back to the second food he ever ate, which was Blue Buffalo chicken and brown rice. I tried a bunch of dry cat foods that is way too long to list. I tried vet diets. I tried sensitive stomach diets. I tried different protiens. I tried the grain free like Fromm's. That worked for awhile, but it didn't have enough bulk and he was throwing up from hairballs.

I can't cook his food, he DOES NOT eat anything but dry crunchy. No chicken, beef, fish, cheese, ect. No canned cat food of anykind and believe me, in the past three months, I have tried them all.

Blue Buffalo worked for him, but it won't work for all cats. The Blue Wilderness grain free does not work. He is fine now and looks and feels good.

Our cats are on a combination of raw and canned food. The raw is human-grade ground chicken with bones and organs. They like the chicken the best, although there is rabbit, beef, duck, turkey and a combination to choose from as well. They don't like turkey or rabbit at all.

The vet doesn't endorse raw feeding and she wants Smudge off of raw completely for a month, and eating a senior canned food for his kidneys. I'll do it just to see if his kidneys improve. Ideally I'd like them all on raw completely but one day they love it, the next day they turn their nose up at it.

I bought some Performatrin, and Weruva canned food. $2 and $3/per 5.5. oz can, Grain-free. Smudge likes it just okay, he doesn't go nuts over it.

I also buy grain-free kibble, Performatrin, Wild Calling or Acana which they get as treats only. They don't eat kibble as part of their diet. Smudge is on thyroid pills and he gets 3/4 of a pill twice/day. The easiest way to give them to him is to buy some flavoured pet paste, enclose the pill in it in a little ball and put in a little dish along with some kibble treats. He eats it all. Hiding the pill in his food doesn't work, he'll lick away at the food and leave the pill in the dish.

I have Blue Buffalo Life Protection, chicken and brown rice, small breed adult dry dog food...hope it's okay, don't see recall on it.

Patrice, There are several of brands of good grain free food that we've used for our dog. She had a lot of issues and I researched dog food for months to find the right mix for her. These are all highly rated, grain free foods that are sourced in the US (or Canada). They're also all sold on Chewy.com

1. Taste of the Wild - one of the less expensive grain free foods. It's popular and dogs really seem to like it including our lab but her favorite is their soft food which is chucks and gravy which we mix it in with her kibble. This food has lower Kcals per serving which is a big plus for dogs who are prone to weight gain.

2. Canidae Pure - This is a great food that not a lot of people seem to know about. There are only 5 or 6 ingredients and for a long time it was the only food our dog did well on. Depending on the flavor, the kcals tend to be a bit higher but our dog loves it. The soft food is a pate. I stay clear of the Salmon pate because I didn't like it's consistency and stick with the Lamb or Duck instead.

3. Acana is a very high grade food, made in Canada. We used this when our dog was younger, but it has a lot of beans in it as well as brewers yeast (and a lot of KCals. She's allergic to yeast and the beans didn't sit well in her stomach so we stopped feeding it to her.

4. Fromm's - A recall was mentioned earlier but I think it needs to be clarified some. Fromm's is a family business and is sourced and made in the US in it's own factory. The "recall" was voluntary, for 3 flavors of canned food they thought may have had too much Vitamin D in it. It wasn't due to anything like contaminants. It's a really good food and the only reason we couldn't use it was because of our dogs reaction to beans/yeast which are in the majority of grain free foods available.

5. Holistic Select - Another less known food that we tried, it's grain free food that our dog really liked and did well on stool wise, but it has brewers yeast and made her itch.

Because of our dogs limitations Canidae and Taste of the Wild have worked best because they have no brewers yeast and just a limited amount of beans but I'd used any of the above if she didn't have those limitations. Hope this helps!

I buy my 3 cats a $60 15 lb bag of Evo. They love it.

A recall is a recall no matter why or what the problem was. The current Blue Buffalo recall is only for one type of can and it was for can fragments. Evangers, which is one of the supposed top dog food companies, just had a recall for drugs left in the beef that was used to kill the cows. I have lost count of all the human food recalls for bacteria, glass, metal fragments, the list goes on and on. My point is: unless it is a deliberate move such as when the Chinese put the chemicals in pet and human food, it is a fact of life in all our food human and pet.

Unless you grow, raise, and process all your food both meat, vegetable, and grain you will always have a chance of encountering a recall.

I am glad your pets do well on the high protein foods. Mine did not. There was too much protein for the kidneys and not enough of fiber to keep the digestive track working.

When you have a medical problem, do you go to a licensed medical doctor, whose treatment can be expected to be based on educated experience and tested scientific techniques demonstrated to be effective? Or do you go to a shaman to smear goose grease on you and chant for your recovery?

Animal nutrition is science-based, not faith-based. The site linked is nothing if not shamelessly irresponsible. The articles and information are anonymous and no sources are cited. It's not information, it's bogus information. There are enough gullible people around who would take it for something more than it is, sharing the link is equally irresponsible in my opinion.

My Vet told me she knows little about mass marketed dog food. Her and I discussed it at length. My little girl has gastro issues and can only eat boiled, boneless, skinless chicken breast. The vet told me each dog with these issues is different and I'd have to try as many different kibbles as I can because its possiable that she can tolorate something, she's seen dogs with gastro issues that can only eat dollar store brands. But she made it plain to me she's a vet not a animial nutritionist...now this is just one vet.

Animal nutrition may be science based, but that science does not recognize, for example, the difference between a human grade meat protein source and an inexpensive protein like corn gluten meal. So, a dog food can be considered AAFCO complete, but that doesn't mean I would feed it to my dog. I have worked for years in dog rescue. I have seen the difference that higher quality food makes in a dog's fur and skin. When I do an owner giveup of a dog and they send along the Ol' Roy or Beneful or Purina Dog Chow - all AAFCO complete, the first thing I do is trash that food.

I use Dog Food Advisor as a quick reference to know what is in a particular brand of dog food,

You can be sure that for the major brands, animal nutrition requirements, ingredients and pet food products, are researched and understood in a scientific way by people who are educated and experienced to do so, and not just by stay at home adults and retirees who contribute to the site that you like.

Lukkirish, I have to agree with Elmer on this one. DFA Is a bad site. It is no better for having accurate info, than Facebook is for having accurate news. All of the cat food recommended on Cat Food Advisor (which is the site for cats run by the same person as Dog Food Advisor) was making my cat sicker and sicker.

Arkansasgirl, you did with your dog what I did with my cat. You found out what was bothering him. Iams is a fine dog food, we have used it for several of our dogs.

This is what I like to say about the advice given on DFA; "it looks good on paper". It all appeals to our need to want the best for our little dogs and I totally fell into the trap when I first got my dog. I wanted only the best for her. Well dogs aren't the same as people and dogs don't need people food. As an example; my dog's most favorite thing in the world to eat comes out of the back end of a cat! Need I say more?! HA!

However, Purina sued them for ingredients in their food that they said they didn't add. Blue Buffalo settled the case.

I give our dogs Nature's Select and it is holistic dog food.

Besides the latest trouble, Blue Buffalo was a big offender in the melamine scandal in 2007. I was using Blue Buffalo at that time and was outraged. Calls/letters to the company went completely unanswered. I will never use this product again. I think they are really unethical.

In general, I distrust any company that does a lot of advertising.

My cats both got sick using the Blue Buffalo brand and at tne time I was using that brand to feed our dogs. After going to a farmers market we found the holistic food. It is local and they deliver. Our vet has told me a couple horror stories about the dog food. I use holistic dog food and my dogs love it.
