Which garbage disposal?

Hi y'all,

Our garbage disposal is making horrible sounds. I have my plumber coming to check it out, but I think it's out of warranty (we just bought the place in the fall). He suggested purchasing one from Home Depot so that we would have it in case he has to replace the disposal.

I'm looking at the InSinkErator Evolution Compact or InSinkErator Evolution Essential. I know the Evolution Excel is really the best one, but it's over $300.

The Compact is 36.4 cubic inches and the Essential is 40 cubic inches. Do I need the larger one? The price difference is about a hundred bucks.

Thanks for any thoughts!

I bought this one at Home Depot. It replaced one that looked just like it that was who knows how old. Works great.

honestly, I buy $50 insinkerators off ebay; they last me 7-9 years. I've yet to have one die earlier than that.

Marie: I have a powerful Kitchen Aid batch feed disposal and to tell you the truth, I don't use it much at all. Now since it's there I do run it once every two or three days to clear the gunk so the dishwasher drains properly, but for the most part, it stands unused. But I can let bits and pieces of food slide down. I also have a prep sink, and that has no disposal and that's where we do most of our peeling, pasta draining, etc. It is a little more work to collect the leftovers under these circumstances. But really it's just a matter of adapting your food prep and cleaning styles. Once you're used to a new routine, it won't take more than a few seconds to work in the kitchen. Use a rubber spatula to scrap food into your trash as you clear the table. Get a coffee can for grease and keep it in your freezer. When you are cleaning a greasey pan, drain the grease into the coffee can and then return it to the freezer. When it fills up, throw it away right before you carry the garbage to the big can outside. Maybe one of those step-on gargbage cans would work best for you. Look at the Container Store's website, then go to Walmart and buy the affordable version. Good luck!

Anna, I have read a few comprehensive discussions about garbage disposals on the appliance forum. You might try there. A link is at the top of the kitchen forum page. I am also looking at batch feed disposals because I don't want to have a switch on the wall or countertop. I don't know what model or manufacturer at this point.

Our GD is in the larger bowl b/c that's where most of the dirty dishes are stacked & rinsed. We use the smaller side to soak utensils so our large bowl is the one dishes are scraped into. (The other factor was that the bigger bowl is a bigger target for peeling potatoes into!) We did this arrangement purely for the above use, it had nothing to do w/which side the DW or Trash is on. In our case, the Trash is on the left, DW on the right. The large bowl w/disposer is on the left, small bowl on the right. BTW...even though the GD is on the left bowl, our airswitch is on the right side of the sink over the small bowl...no problems w/that location. It worked out best in that location b/c the soap dispenser works best for us on the left and we decided to "balance" the accessories and put the airswitch on the right.

I've had it in the small side in 2 sinks and it always bothered me, mainly because plates get stacked in the large side, and that side always had the largest chunks of food that I would need to dump out of the strainer to the small side. This is in 2 kitchens, one where I prepped at the perimeter counter, and also one where I did all my prep at an island. If I had a lot of scraps left from prep I composted or wouldn't think of dumping down my disposal (too much). I only used the disposal for peels on small jobs, but I have a family of 5.

I would never get a Badger style disposal or a $50 one off eBay. They simply won't grind as finely, and you are risking your pipes getting clogged. Your savings of at most $150-200 by buying those cheap disposals will be far outstripped by just one plumbing call after a clog, plus any damage if there is flooding. Penny wise and pound foolish.

The decision between the Insinkerator compact model vs Essential is about the dimensions under your sink. The outlet of the disposal--the pipe the water flows out of the disposal--must be higher than the pipe under your sink that it connects to. If what you currently have is not compact, then you should be able to fit the Essential version. But don't take it out of the box until your plumber gets there. If he looks at it and says it won't fit, then exchange it for the Compact version.

I seem to have an InSinkErator 444. Amazon says it's 8 x 8 x 13.

The compact Evolution is 8 x 8 x 12.

The Essential is 12 x 14 x 13.

Guess I'm getting the compact! Thanks! At least it has a 4-year warranty and it's only $180.
