Garbage Disposal in 60/40 sink
Comments (16)This is a link to the Whitehaus 60/40 sink we have. Small bowl is situated on the right in our install. We did install disposal in the small side, but honestly I have been thinking that I might have liked it better in the larger side. That side is large enough for dirty dishes and scraping, frankly. The small side is really small and I have to be careful when I am "aiming" -- we have container for veg. peels, eggshells, etc. for compost, but scraping dishes is a bit of a pain into such a small space, especially when training the 6 & 9 y.o. to do it. :) Here is a link that might be useful: whitehaus sink...See MoreTo garbage disposal or not garbage disposal
Comments (26)My husband and I were just discussing this the other day, if we had it to do over again, we wouldn't. I don't really cook the kind of meals that need a lot of "disposing" and my garbage is picked up twice a week. I don't think it is worth the sometimes smelly unpleasantness. It probably is more likely to smell if you hardly ever use it, as in our case. I only got it because I replaced the one that went on the fritz after 16 years. I should have just ditched it then and could have gotten a different kind of sink but that's a whole other story. I also don't like how much room it takes up under the sink....See MoreShold garbage disposal be at prep sink or main sink?
Comments (12)Kgypso - your contractor is probably thinking of the ol' Badger disposals--he's likely installed a heap of those, and they don't grind very well. I very much hope you are getting disposals (note the plural; I recommend one in each sink) with either 3/4 or 1 hp motor, and all stainless steel innards. If you have that, your disposals will be powerful enough such that grind will be very fine and not clog up your pipes. I just posted another thread about the This Old House Show visiting the InSinkErator factory in Racine, WI. To test the quality of the disposals coming off the line, they had each disposal grind 35 lbs. of steer rib bones and 6 lbs. of pine cubes. Pretty impressive. Furthermore, the InSinkErator rep said that the bones actually help clean the grinding mechanism which makes it more efficient. Make sure your contractor isn't still thinking of the way they used to make disposals 25 years ago, and make sure that he is installing powerful disposals for you (3/4 hp or 1 hp)....See MoreWhich garbage disposal?
Comments (5)I would never get a Badger style disposal or a $50 one off eBay. They simply won't grind as finely, and you are risking your pipes getting clogged. Your savings of at most $150-200 by buying those cheap disposals will be far outstripped by just one plumbing call after a clog, plus any damage if there is flooding. Penny wise and pound foolish. The decision between the Insinkerator compact model vs Essential is about the dimensions under your sink. The outlet of the disposal--the pipe the water flows out of the disposal--must be higher than the pipe under your sink that it connects to. If what you currently have is not compact, then you should be able to fit the Essential version. But don't take it out of the box until your plumber gets there. If he looks at it and says it won't fit, then exchange it for the Compact version....See MoreUser
