I know this doesn't help but that is so neutral you can do anything there! Why don't you stop into a good tile store and see if they can help? That's how I got a lot of great ideas for my bathroom and foyer.

joebates, when you decided to do that countertop, what were you thinking for a backsplash? What would make your heart sing when you walk into your kitchen? I have very busy countertops, so I let them become the star and my backsplash is very neutral. You can have a busier backsplash, but in 10 years, will you still love it or will your tastes have changed?

No, I actually haven't. We got side tracked. I decided to try to stay neutral and have not yet found anything that fits the bill. The fairbourne is about the same color as crema marfil marble. I am trying to stay with easy to clean and care for ceramic tile. Have you found any tile or decorative tile that you like yet? I looked at Sonoma stellar seashell, which was a bit too light, I have looked at United Tile Island Pebbles Kuta White for a deco, Crossville savoy: Linen. If you don't mind the upkeep, Durango Travertine in 2x4 inch looks good.

We are not looking for a busy small tile backsplash though there are very lovely glass tiles. Our kitchen faces east and gets a ton of sun and the glass has a bit too much glare/reflection.

Have you found anything that looks good? There almost no good photos on line. I love my countertops and will take the time to find that just right tile.

Thanks Joe! I'm planning to use a classic subway tile, maybe with an accent strip - if I can't talk my DH out of it. :)

I would like to find a 3X6, or maybe even a little larger, subway tile that picks up the color of the creamy veining in the quartz. Mine isn't installed yet, so I've been waiting to get samples until the quartz is in. We have an additional challenge with our trim work being a creamy white, but that seems to match the quartz beautifully. (Sherwin Williams Dover White)

If I find anything I will definitely let you know! By the way, your kitchen is gorgeous, I love the cherry.

Thanks. I love the subway tile look. I thinkthe 2x6 tiles look good to. Once the grout is in, there is enough interest to be beautiful. I am planning to hit the tile stores in a week or so, so I will return the favor if I find anything. What color are your cabinets?

I agree that you should wait until the counters are installed to pick a backsplash tile. Lighting and sun exposure really impact how it all looks, The cabinet color adds a dynamic color as well. I have a neighbor that used the fairbourne, her cabinets were cherry but a bit redder than mine, her kitchen faced north and the backsplash she used looked great in her kitchen but not so great in mine. She used a united tile 3x12 tile, the color was carmel but I can't recall the name of the tile .

Our cabinets are Maple in a praline finish. I wanted Cherry, but we have a tiny kitchen and I was afraid the grain would be too much.

This is a few months ago so you may have decided by now. I am using Bliss accent in glass. It has a beige, gray, and cream in it with an off white subway tile in I think an 8 inch. Tile is coming from Virginia Tile. My cabinets are cherry stained like in some of the pics. I am not into gray which is the trend...more of the neutrals.

Believe it or not I have not finished. I dropped the project for a while. I am also looking at cream colored subway tiles as nothing else really looked great. I am looking at Sonoma Stellar Ivory, Walker Zanger 6th avenue canvas gloss, Equipe country color Ivory (a bit yellow) and Statue Cermanic color bone crackle. What did you end up with? Any photos?

Just happened to be looking at tile placement and saw your post Joe. Hmmm after searching all over the place and loving the bliss tile they changed dye lots. Out with the more beige and in with more gray. I wanted the beige to go with my silgranite blanco sink. I am going ahead with this. My subway is not the real small pc and in Crossville Tea for Two. Tile has not gone up yet. I am now trying to decide where to put the tile on one wall... I need to ck out your colors... tile is here to be put in.

Thanks for the advise. I am just going with paint then I won't wish I had put it here or there. I will post a before and after later. My under cabinet lights are going in as I type.

Your kitchen is so much like mine it is amazing. I would love to see your photos. I am probably going with the sonoma Ivory or status ceramics bone crackle. Sonoma has many more choices in terms of tile size and shape so it may come down to that. Are you using 3x6 tiles or smaller? Thanks for the input!

I have seen some examples of nice polished travertine with the Cambria Fairbourne. I personally do not want a backsplash that requires that much maintenance. Travertine has to be sealed every 6 months to a year and doesn't handle grease splatter well behind the stove. If those things are not an issue for you then I think it would be very pretty.

i disagree w/that one joebates,,,I've had a tumbled travertine tile backsplash for over 10 years. I've sealed it maybe twice. Directly behind the stove when I clean, I use a scrubby brush and Dawn (for the grease). Stays perfectly clean and haven't had any staining issues. Backsplashes don't get the traffic that floors and showers do, so sealing them frequently isn't an issue.

Lisa, i've had those sonoma crackle tiles. sealing them was to prevent grout from getting in the cracks, as well as water. if too much water penetrates those crackle joints, it will cause the tile to 'haze' and dull. I had the smaller decorative tiles in my shower. sealed them once or twice and never had an issue w/them.

Hi! So, I am sitting here reading all of the comments and I am dying to know the end of this cliff hanger. Joe Bates 100, what did you finally decide to do about the backsplash against your Cambria quartz Fairbourne countertops? I came upon this thread because I was Googling the very same question. I think that your original query was posted nearly 4 years ago. You probably have sold the house by now. :) I think that I am leaning to a basic subway tile since my intent is to brighten up the kitchen. I inherited that awful Baltic Brown granite when I bought my house. I'm going from that dark, busy granite to the very light colored Fairbourne quartz. I think it will make a big difference in brightening up the kitchen but I will certainly have to work much harder keeping the new countertops clean.
