Comments (2)I just got my first plant and i was surprised at how bit it is. I ordered it from amazon and most people said theirs came in at about six inches. Mine is about 12 inches with 9 leaves and two small sprouts on the bottom. It looked very healthy so i transplanted it to a new pot as the roots were growing through the pot. I will continue to monitor it. T Here is a link that might be useful: my photos...See MoreTillandsia Cyanea - tips before going away on holiday
Comments (2)Hi everyone AledysV - As you say the conditions will not be good for bromeliads, cold temperatures and low light combined are not good, and although bromeliads are very resilient plants, I think that standing the plant in a bowl with water is probably a death sentence under those conditions. Remember the water will get very cold and as well as the roots being waterlogged they will alos be very cold as well, not a good combination. Far better to farm it out to one of your neighbours, even one with no experience with bromeliads could care for it better if you give them some simple written instructions on what's required. Comments (4)Ah Caneel Bay....we so enjoyed our stay there, but it must be 20 yrs ago, so I doubt anything I'd recommend now would be relevant. We did a lot of snorkeling...wore our white t-shirts to help prevent severe sun burn on our backs...we did Turtle Bay and we enjoy the ranger walks and talks and snorkeling as most of St. John is national park. There were 3 fab restaurants right at Caneel Bay but make sure you wear a dress or skirt for dinner....I was frowned upon for wearing a nice pair of slacks one night when I was there. And they have 7 beaches on the property so you can spend a day at each beach and never leave the place. The other thing I remember was renting a jeep and driving around the island....it was really scary in many spots as the road is narrow, the curves are very steep and winding with no guard rails, and you're driving on the left side of the road, so passing on hills, corners etc can be a bit stressful. When we were there, they were just building the Hyatt, so I suspect the island maybe busier now than it was then. Enjoy!...See MoreAny Go Fund Me set-up tips?
Comments (14)I hope you won't think I'm a "naysayer", I'm not saying don't do a GME (or Youcaring, etc.) but I wanted to offer other options too. I have been involved in fundraising for similar projects. The most recent was in Guatemala. For the shoes, toothbrushes and possibly even drugs, I would contact people about donating. We did shoes and toothbrushes (and other items) and much of this was donated by some area dentists and other groups, stores, etc. We also had a car show and "yard sale" to fund some of the items we needed. We have friends who are missionaries in Honduras. They work with a medical team (go out into the less populated areas with a team of both missionaries and medical staff). They have raised funds through selling of items (some wonderful candles made in the area) and coffee from their area. Just a few ideas. Also, as a project leader in my area for the Operation Christmas Child (shoe box project) you can find flip-flops (probably now) for cheap. We bought up a ton at places like Target, dollar store, etc. well in advance. Sounds like a great experience and I wish you much luck in obtaining funding/items!...See More
