Help! Janet Craig Dracaena - worth saving?

Kat S

My Janet Craig plant was going brown at the tips, the soil we bought it in was dry and clumpy as rocks and the roots were starting to poke out of the original pot, so I decided to repot it. Since then it has really gone down hill and I'm afraid it might be too late to save it!

I'm guessing that I overwatered it with the repotting; it's been about two weeks and is still damp. It does have drainage, but maybe the soil is packed too tightly for it to evaporate? I've also been reading that I should use distilled water, because these plants are sensitive to tap water.

What can I do from here? Just take it out, clean off the current soil and repot with fresh soil without watering? Should I trim back any of the dying/dead leaves?

I feel horrible that this plant went from bad to worse because I didn't know what I was doing. I know it might be a wash at this point, but I appreciate any suggestions of ways to save it!
